What We Learned From The West Bromwich Albion Match : 17.11.2012

What We Learned From West Brom Match : 17.11.12
2-1 to West Brom after 94 minutes at The Hawthorns. 3 headers and many wasted chances left us without a win in our last 4 PL matches.

Scorers :
Long (10')
Hazard (39')
Odemwingie (50')

What We Learned :
1. Gary Cahill > Luiz
2. New striker needed
3. Defense without Terry is woeful
4. Romeu-Mikel isn't working
5. Squad rotation isn't Di Matteo's forte
6. Mata is our best playmaker
7. Winter Blues continue

1. Gary Cahill > Luiz: For me, Cahill is our new Terry. He is composed, calm, relaxed and makes quick decisions that don't cost us. David Luiz is a very talented player and his personality is one of a kind and you just can't hate him. However, Luiz's recent performances have been poor and he continued that streak v West Brom, Cahill still stole the spotlight in defense. His performances compared to Luiz this season have made it clear that he is our #2 center back. I wouldn't be against selling Luiz in the winter and bringing in someone like Cahill or Terry.

2. New striker needed: This is the most obvious observation. Torres : Doesn't shoot; passes more, Sturridge : Doesn't pass; shoots more. This is so frustrating and it has me worried because we have to go through a month and a half without a clinical finisher. Torres didn't make any effort to score today and Sturridge did, but couldn't finish. It's something that's cost us points and this is leading to our downfall and release of the Premier League lead as well as chances of going back up, soon. Cavani, Falcao, Lewandowski, Long, Suarez - it's your choice, Roman.

3. Defense without Terry is woeful:  It's John Terry's first game away due to injury and it's really tough on us. Terry is a crucial part of our defense and trying to work without him is very, very hard. His physical presence in the box (ours and theirs) is something you can't replace and his leadership is out of this world. We've conceded 12 goals in our last few games without Terry and with Terry we had the best defense in the league. David Luiz just can't seem to do what Terry does.

4. Romeu-Mikel isn't working: It's too defensive and it sets us back. We play rather defensive with them and when attacking, they don't have the edge to finish, shoot or pick a pass. Also, both are slow on the ball and don't track back well enough. Ramires-Mikel or Ramires-Lampard are the only combinations that lead us to victory or solidity in that position. Di Matteo must stop using Romeu and Mikel together as it is absolutely fatal to our chances of willing.

5. Squad rotation is not Di Matteo's forte: Di Matteo seems to be struggling with squad rotation. It's quite obvious with Romeu-Mikel. Some say that resting is why Mata, Oscar and Ramires didn't play, but that's bad for us. We must focus on individual games instead of the long stretch. 3 points was much needed today and we didn't get it. If we don't get a win or draw against Juventus, it's official that RDM isn't doing well with the rotation business.

6. Mata is our best playmaker: With Mata, we're brilliant and we can dominate every team and create as many chances as we can. It's brilliant to see for us. Without Mata, we lacked something in shape, size and form of Mata. We couldn't just surge forward and create opportunities which were limited in this match. We must find an alternative to Mata's creativity if we chose to rest him, because without him, we aren't the same team (for bad reasons). It's definitely something that hurts us and Di Matteo must find a way to use him in every match.

7. Winter Blues continue: November continues to trouble us and it's a big concern for us. We must pick up our form and eliminate the bad run of matches, because it will peg us back and back in the table and make winning the PL much harder. Di Matteo must master squad rotation and hopefully the Club World Cup in Japan gives us some confidence and a trophy to bring back to the Bridge and form for the PL.

Other Points :
1. WHERE IS MARKO MARIN?!
2. Luiz/Bertrand -> bench
3. Title race is still on, but marginally.

  1. You know, RDM annoys me a lot, and at this point, I don't care if he loses his job. When I saw the team sheet, I screamed, Mikel - Romeu? What is the coach thinking? I noticed Mata was on the bench with Oscar, yet MARIN was also on the bench? This isn't squad rotation man. Marin and Mata are both creative, and RDM rests both? and calls it squad rotation?
We all know how useless Torres can be, buh Torres would probably have been a better combination with Mata and Hazard, as we have seen earlier in the season and both at the Euros. This has cost us, and CHELSEA will be foolish not to heed Ashley's demands, as Ryan Betrand isn't ready to be a starter. KTBFFH

  2. There is a need to strengthen the squad. We are simply to thin and can't achieve much with this squad. A creative midfielder, a proven striker and perhaps a decent deep playing midfielder needed.

    ReplyDelete
  3. This arrogance from RDM to play Torres will cost his job. Even the commentator says Torres was not exist on the pitch. And trust me, Torres will play the next game. How long Roberto will stay again as chelsea coach? only God knows but I think it is not for long time. We cannot continue to play with 10 players. We cannot continue in this way! Enough is enough!

Also, Romeu must go. When I read on this website that we got to give a chance to romeu and josh, I say myself: oh my God! Torres, romeu, sturrige must leave chelsea ASAP. We need at least 4 players in january, otherwise we will not get even champions league next year.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Lets get Falcao in January if we extremely want to challenge the manchester clubs this season. If not then we need to wait untill next sommer for him. From the look of things i fear Di matteo's job. I want watch our champions league match because i know we will lose against Juventus since we are in bad run as at now realistically. In a nutshell, we desperately need a prolific striker in January and a defender. Actually, it seems David Luiz makes almost the same mistakes in defense. We can use David Luiz in midfield rather than defense. Sturridge? He still needs experience and should try to be effective rather than wasting chances. For me i prefer Gurdiola to RDM. Where is Marin?

    ReplyDelete
  5. Hehehehe, why complaining? Anyway, we played against a good team and there where a lot of lessons learnt.(1) the team can create good chances. Some people have been complaining that the midfield only pass the ball around, but it is obvious they only need an outlet upfront. Sturidge played more like a striker and I would like him to learn his trade from a real world class striker. He was obviously not fully fit and lacks confidence. Anyway, playing on the wing didn't help anyone at the end (2) RDM is not really a top manager. His utility of players is absolutely questionable. Hazard was so tired, what is his beef with Marin (3) David Luiz should be watched closely, along side Romeu and Betrand.

  6. Honestly, i hope Di matteo get sacked because sometimes his competant is questionable. We want Gurdiola.

  7. Here is a Torretical trick. If we get knocked out of the Champions League, then we can only sign Talcao. Hehehehehe.

  8. I had an argument with a friend. I don't agree that Drogba spends more time on the floor compared to Torres. Do u agree.

  9. While Sturridge was striking from the wings, Torres was creating from the 9, lol. Hope u now understand why the sub was perfect.

    ReplyDelete
  10. If the sub was perfect we would have won the match.. ppl keep telling me how he gets more chances than Torres.. and still he doesnt score. I will prefer Torres any day.. We tend to score more goals because our team play improves with him around. he tends to be in our buildup to goals which obv u guys dont see.

    1. With Torres we would have been complaining we do not create chances. Come on! We've tried this so many times. The necessary runs for a striker has always been analysed after each match and Torres never makes them. Sturridge just reminded you that the striker is meant to be the the most dangerous player on the field and you dare to rate him lowly.

  11. Simply put.. TORRES > STURRIDGE.

  12. I like your views my fellow blues. Torres is in a different class from Danny Sturridge. Take a look at the game again, and you would see, some of the runs and chances Sturridge missed especially with the link up play with Mata, Torres might just have given us a goal from one of them since he understands Mata well. I guess Marko Marin would be out by January. Again, I love Luiz, buh looks like he might cost us both the EPL and Champions league. KTBFFH

  13. I didn't watch the game but quickly checked to see the score during the 92nd minuted. I was suprised to see Azpiliqueta with the ball to try and swing in another of the predictable crosses Chelsea tend to play from the right these days. Honestly,in the beginning of the season I expected our creative players to try and play through the middle. I stick with my reasoning,Torres isn't the weak link...the tactics are.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Ok, I do agree that RDM's tactics contributes to our poor games but given the players at his disposal, he should be more secured. Torres is no special weapon. He doesn't really bring any advantage to our side. I believe if Sturidge had started, we might have won the game. They scored us against the run of play. Torres doesn't really have good stamina either, so that makes the sub ok. Sturidge barely had enough energy left for movement but couldn't score. There was now so much pressure and that is why he is not to be the main man for now.

    1. did u see the match.......sturidge did start the game........

    2. Yes, but not as the Striker up front. You can't say he was given a start as the striker in the EPL and its just like last season. RDM should be careful because I see him killing the confidence of Sturidge and Marin. Its now obvious that we only have one striker and other utility players.

  15. My preferred eleven for this match was:-
cech-azpi-ivanovic-cahil-bertrand-mikel-oscar-moses-hazard-marin-torres...we can't rest all our key players...both mikel and romeu are defensive players..romeu playing backwards...there is no creativity from centre...oscar shuld hv done better...what happened to our german messi marin???

  17. David Luiz flop of the match.

    ReplyDelete
  18. We do not have a real striker, but at least we can recognise one who is close to it. One who can eventually score goals. Danny is a kid and this game time is good investment for his development. It is a different ball game if Torres had missed those chances but I bet he wouldn't have gotten them because he doesn't like to be at the end of creativity only at the. Beginning.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I dont know but i am starting to agree with the world that what happened under RDM last season was nothing but luck.
1.RDM doesnt even vary his tactics, EVERY SINGLE game we go in with 4231, NOT considering the game plan of our opponents.
2.Torres is nowhere near striking.A striker who doesn't shoot, win balls in the air, poor first touches.
    3. sturridge can become a deadly striker when given more playing time like torres. Lets put the selfishness aside, which he can work on. he can go solo when it is neeeded, he can shoot from every angle,he looks determined to prove something.
    4. dI MAtteo is not there yet. His changes are questionable, choice of players questionable.
with all these quality in the team;''if u dont go to heaven dont blame Jesus''

  24. Its now clear we need falcao and rdm doesn't seem to know how to rotate players. Reply for poll, just to pose the question of 1) mourinho back (he said it himself he wants to come back or 2) guardiola in. Who would you want?

  25. When RDM gets the UCL trophy, we hail him the best... When he loses 2 games, he hail him the worst? Really people? Plastic fans much? Again with the striker, I always called for Sturridge chance and after yesterday I was sold! He needs to play every match! All the matchs! Why? His positioning was excellent, his pace was unmatched and his misses? I dub them unlucky... If it was Torres, these chances wouldn't have missed, rather not made, at all! As for defense, I would like to see cahill and iva on CB cause Azpi is soo good as RB! For me, bertrand was great yesterday in defense but not in offense, he just needs more exp...

    ReplyDelete
  26. Wow I was surprised when I saw the squad for the match, but when we lost I wasnt surprised to come here and see those comments.Like one guy said Plastic fans much?
On squad rotation I think RDM has a problem because the squad lacks depth, one of the disadvantages of spending money on these high profile players, and possibly loaning essien. But the players who should be aiming to break into the first team arent performing well enough and give little competition to members of the first team.Bertrand and Romeu are very guilty of this.Azpilicueta is impressive and seems to be improving every match I like his pace but his predictable cross needs to be improved.

In attack Sturridge seeems to be suffering from lack of confidence due to not playing regularly enough, if we intend to keep him this needs to be sorted out.

I would also like to see Marin play but maybe for some reason whatever hes doing in training isnt satisfactoy for RDM. I havent seen him in training so I cant comment. But I do aggree hes killing Marins confidence.

Also people forget we have Terry Lampard and Cole injured, we are bound to have some problems, have some patience with the manager he bleeds blue.Come on Blues!!!

Oh and the geezer great lad...cant play defense.

    1. A.Cole was rested, he wasn't injured... But other than that I completely agree with you! And you seem to completely agree with me... So might I ask why did my comment(" Plastic fans much?") bother you? You can't deny the fact that what I said is true.. I just like to see more support and faith rather than thrashing our Managers! Wenger hasn't won anything in 7 years and we can't support RDM for a couple of games? Sad really...

      Delete
    2. It is not truth. We support RDM but cannot support anymore to see torres every single game. it is so painful to see him play. RDM has to try anything else.

      Delete
    3. I am sorry if you thought i took it in offense about plastic fans...that was me aggreeing with you again although I did not consider Wenger when I commented I was thinking more along how SAF lost the same day and they arent calling for his head.

On the topic of torres I too supported him for a while but it really does seem like his time, and Im currently on the fence of buying Falcao as the same thing could happen. But its very obivous we definitely need at least one new striker look at
Man city and Man u and the plethora of strikers they have.

As fans we definitely need some patience, like i said RDM bleeds blue but the squad has no depth, who would the other complainers play with the squad he has.Be intelligent fans and
try to see the options the manager has....very little.

  28. I wouldnt think abramovic would be pressurised into doing anything. The problem is, i would imagine it was him that insisted they bought Torres cos he wants the best of everything.. Ancelotti wasnt happy about it - and he went at the end of the season. Same happened with Shevchenko, Mourinho didnt want him and it was downhill for him from there. Doubt Di Matteo gets a say in it at all. FROM JACKIE

  29. we don't have anything like plastic fans here. We all watch the matches, oscar plays very well, then what do you see ,He is substituted. Torres doesnt even try attempt at goal then he still be playing falling, shaking his head and making comments that are not needed.

He won the champions league, yes! he was congratulated. so it goes for the opposite if you are loosing u need to be corrected.

Chelsea is different from arsenal. THey have more league trophies than us, they dont even splash that much. chelsea does the opposite, so expectation should follow.

chelsea really dont have so many trophies to brag. wE NEED to catch fast.

  30. I would assume the situation with RDM when it comes to torres was that he was a £50 million investment and if he could turn around the squad last year then why not have a a shot at torres. It did seem like he was coming around slowly for some part but obiously now its pretty clear he isnt and I expect to see RDM start selecting another striker, prob sturridge.
On Oscar you seem to forget this is his first season in the BPL you also seem to forget how young and frail his body is and how physical this league can be.
Of course substitute him can we afford to have him sidelined like the other injuries we have.If you doubt this is why he substitutes him compare his situation to how Mata was rested after the summer because he was playing too many games.... and the treatment worked!!!.

I think hes still a great manager who needs some time, his mistake yesterday was taking West Brom likely and having too much faith in torres, and I cant put him at fault because I do remember praising Torres when he scored against Barcelona...didnt you?

    ReplyDelete
  31. I will say it over and over again that it is the player's team spirit that gave Chelsea the UCL not RDM tactics or experience, RDM is not a coach that can handle a big team like CFC, how did he perform when he was given the managerial job at West Brom? he got booted because he could not deliver well. He is just making that name in Chelsea because he has got good, quality, and high profile players that CFC can buy. Di Matteo lacks most qualities a top coach possesses, I was reading his comment yesterday stating that he would go back to his defensive philosophy so that CFC could maintain its pace on the table till January,.. give this current Chelsea squads to a very good experienced coach and see how dangerous CFC could be to other teams, let's continue biting our fingers blaming Torres and Stru. alone when the so called CFC manager lacks ideas and experience in the name RDM.. he should go for more coaching training to be that perfect.

    ReplyDelete
  32. For me chelsea fans are never grateful, and human wants are insatiable, if you feel he is not doing the job well, then what stops you from applying... I bet you guys that even if we buy all this crop of players that you demand, You will still ask for more and also condemn the coach...afterall this boys have not played for and they are getting used to themselves... Torres should be swapped for falcao...You guys think Guardiola is the best, but I bet you he is not the best...RDM is the best...And if you don;t care whether he lose the job, he is also not concerned if he is sacked because he has made the history and it will remain evergreen

    ReplyDelete
  33. Di Matteo should not be blamed for the recent drop in points in EPL games, the whole blames boils down to our goal shy striker Torres, who has failed the team...Oh My God, where comes the inspiration if a striker don;t know how to score. Wasteful sturridge is better and also useless to us, the whole answer to all this controversies is Falcao...Please you guys should leave Di Matteo alone, for me he is doing the job and dimiss every speculation about Guardiola,Guardiola can;t handle a team as chelsea, and I don;t think he is the best.. if Di matteo handles a team like Barca, he will remain unstoppable..We Love you RDM...

    ReplyDelete
  34. Mr.Annonymous...please tell the floor what you mean by managerial qualities? If you claim that it was chelsea team spirited that revived them to champions glory, then why did the spirit fail in terms of AVB? Most times chelsea fans are frustrating and person like you is not a die-hard fan, stop criticizing the manager and say something reasonable..or you seal your lips untill the time of the end...toadpole..And by that way, don;t fail to answer my question..Mr know all.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Mr. Anonymous,in addition, you are not a good historian, the same you feel that didn;t perform well in west brom was also the same man that promoted west brom from relegation table to premier table...If you have sentimental feelings for him,is up to you...And the same Torres you are defending that has failed this season, he failed during Ancelloti,AVB,and is still failing now.. If you like call God to come down and coach Chelsea, Torres will never improve... Better learn how to sit and analyse, watch chelsea football..And what kind of Manager do you think that can manage Chelsea,if not RDM?

  36. I,m Matter by name,I will love you guys to attach your names as you deliver your suggestions... Let us know ourselves. This issue of annonymos,I don;t understand...The blues and one love...Take it easy with Di Matteo, this is a new team and they are yet to know themselves, don;t blame the coach for all this impatient blue fans..I bet you Guardiola is never the solution.. Guardiola was only lucky to handle an already established team...

    ReplyDelete
  37. I love that word Plastic fans..when Di Matteo won the champions League the echo was All Hail Di matteo, but now because he is loosing games because of Torres and shambolic individual defence they are now screaming crucify him...Di Matteo is never our problem and since he took over the managerial seat, his substitution has been perfect even against shaktar, Barca, bayern munich, and even in west brom, the only difference btw that of west brom and others is that we had no leading striker that bury our balls into the net... For my fellow fans out there, the fun of the game is winning and loosing. without it, there is no fun... I love Di Matteo and Abrahimovich for now is not thinking of sacking him...Falcao is the solution

    ReplyDelete
  38. k im eli and i was the second to call these fans plastic. Its obvious the squad suffers from lack of depth and injury problems and I hope the fans here can see that sacking RDM doesnt bring squad depth or the new striker we desperately need.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Well, I do not totally blame RDM for the recent crises, neither do I believe he is better than Pep. I think RDM is doing good handling a top team and implementing a new style of play but is model is not the best you can find. His rotation policy has not been so great and his yardstick for selecting some players on the field has been questionable. On his tactical ability, it is right to say we have no plan B unless the defensive tweak of last season. The manner with Chelsea attack crosses has been alarming and even more when it comes to defending it. Overall, he is a good manager but some players are letting him down. He is improving and now beginning to make those had decisions. As soon as we get those players who are no better than malouda off the team, the better. Xtian from Nigeria.
