Apologies for my lame attempt at an Oscar "joke" in the headline. But I'd advise you to get used to it. We're going to see many such jokes now!
Back to the matter at hand... Chelsea have signed Oscar. The highly-rated Brazilian midfielder completed his move to Stamford Bridge after a few weeks of speculation linking him to the club. Question is, where exactly will we play him?
It's an interesting question, considering how versatile Oscar is. He is an attacking midfielder, but can also play on the wings or even as a deep lying play-maker. I believe that his versatility is one of the main reasons Chelsea signed him in the first place. With his ability, he can slot in to any one of the midfield positions in our 4-2-3-1 formation.
Here's taking a look at where he could play, the chances of him playing in that particular position & how he would perform in whichever position he is played in:-
1) In the hole- Oscar's preferred position is to play in the hole behind the striker i.e. the No. 10 role. I believe he will be lethal if played in that position. He has the ability to find the striker with that killer pass, & he doesn't rush the pass either. He has quick feet & is very skillful, which means he doesn't find it difficult to keep possession. There is no doubt that he would do a fine job if played in that position. But with Mata having made that position his own last season & Hazard also making it clear that he would like to play more centrally, I don't see Oscar playing as our "No. 10" too often.
2) On the wings- Oscar has played on the right wing before. With his natural talent & skills, it isn't hard to understand why. He can keep the ball well, & is known for his ability to pick out a team-mate with a good pass. If he plays as a winger at Chelsea, he would add another dimension to Chelsea's wing-play. However, I don't see him playing on the wings an awful lot. Hazard, Mata & Marin will almost certainly be the first-choice wingers. Throw in the fact that both Ramires & Sturridge also played on the wings last season, & I can confidently say that Oscar will not be used as an option out wide. Don't be surprised if he isn't used as a winger on a regular basis.
3) Central midfielder- I expect Oscar to be used in this position more often than not. For a while now, Chelsea's Achilles heel has been a lack of a deep lying creative influence. And Oscar could very well be the solution to that problem. In a double pivot such as the type that Chelsea use, it's preferred that one of the players is a creative influence, while the other is more defensive minded. Chelsea have options in the defensive midfield area, but no one to influence the game in a creative manner. I expect Oscar to play quite a few games in that position.
Everything that I have said here is predictive at best. I'm not inside Robbie Di Matteo's head, so I don't know how exactly he will use Oscar. But one thing is for sure, Chelsea supporters can expect big things from this talented young Brazilian.

As a central midfielder? and where will Lampard play? i think Oscar position should be as a right wing, we dont have one exactly.
ReplyDeleteMarin & Hazard are both wingers. Also, don't expect Lampard to start every game next season.
DeleteI am confident that oscar will play well for chealsea as a central milfielder.
ReplyDeleteLampard is with us more for team morale and helping mould the young players. I say if Oscar is flat out better than Lampard in the central midfield, put the guy in. RDM can't e so foolish as to keep lamps there just because of who he is and what he's done. Lampard has had his time and has gotten his fair share of the glory. It's time for him to pass the reigns over to someone younger, hungrier, and just better than the frank Lampard of today. Please RDM don't waste oscar's talent by keeping him
ReplyDeleteOn the bench.
I think Oscar will be beta as a deep lying playmaker cos watching him against Egypt he seemed to thrive in dt role, making intelligent runs from box 2 box spraying beautiful passes and generally d pace of d game @ least 1st half. Guyz methinks dt we have on hands our own answer 2 Modric.
ReplyDeleteA real talent at its best.
ReplyDeleteYes. I noticed how he connects well with the back line, run into space and demand the ball back to make an advanced pass..especially when Neymar was on the right wing making darting runs forward. He was good making runs into the box in which he set up Damiao's goal. Oscar is versatile and i see him being used as an attacking midfielder and a deep lying playmaker. This is off topic but i just want to say that Essien was brilliant against the All-Stars. He owned HE'S MIDFIELD.

I expect Oscar to be usedin various positions as he isn't old enough to keep a position to him self yet.. He's a direct replacement for frank the legend. He's a scoring midfielder.. RDM loves Frank n will play him more than we think cos of his football Brain but will sum him off to be replaced with glorious Oscar( who Luis says is calm and collective) With a formation that d boys are playing now I expect him to play in Deep lying attacking midfield- defensive midfielder next to Essien or Obi. But I prefer Essien let's hope he stays in god health
ReplyDeleteThere isn't such thing as a "deep lying attacking midfield". Oscar will most likely be employed in the same role as Luka Modric performs for Spurs (or whoever he ends up at this season). A deep-lying playmaker, alongside either Mikel, Essien or Romeu.
DeleteBased on all the comments so far, I believe the best position for Oscar is central midfield. I am very impressed with the Marin has played so far and I really truly believe he is going to the best value for money player we have signed this year. His link up play is just excellent. And also I dont think Mata and Hazard can play anywhere other than the three roles behind the strikers forcing RDM to play Oscar as an a creative midfield player who goes on offensive one in a while.
ReplyDeleteI have watched Chelsea's all preseason matches and I think we still lack creativity and Oscar will be the last piece of Jigsaw in our midfield. A powerful striker and an attacking clever right back and I think we will def challenge for the premiere league.
Oscar is a very natural and a talented fella , he is suited for evry position ranging from no. 10 to wings to CM . however super frankie has experince in th CM area..... I think in the Beginning of the Season Oscar should be sent out as a sub like 10 GWs and then if he impresses then he should get a regular start along side of Frankie or essien...
ReplyDeleteso the formation will look good on paper as well as on field .... i am eagerly waiting to see Oscar on the Pitch with Frankie and mata, hazard ,ramires, marin and torres..... Forget about Parking the Bus Theory we will be parking a lot of balls in the oppositions Net....
Cheers KTBFFH !!!!
