Potential Striker Targets Evaluation: Benzema, Dzeko & Jelavic

Which Striker Should Chelsea Pursue?
Chelsea currently have 2 strikers available in Torres and Sturridge and Romelu Lukaku out on loan to West Bromwich Albion. If we choose to buy 1 more, I would suggest picking the right man for the job. With names like Cavani, Falcao, Lewandowski, etc being thrown around, I would like to suggest 3 to legitimately pursue :

1. Karim Benzema (Real Madrid)
2. Edin Dzeko (Manchester City)
3. Nikica Jelavic (Everton)

Now, I know that those names are out of the blue to you, but I will explain why these 3 are better for us than Cavani, Falcao and Lewandowski. Bringing another striker in would be ultimate depth for us and it would mean having other options besides Torres.

1. Karim Benzema : The French man at Real Madrid is my definition of a true striker. He moves smartly and has a hell of a shot in both legs. Benzema can also score goals and brilliant ones, too. He has the quality and the output to propel us to new heights. I believe he is the best bet to go after. But Benzema like to drop back back a little way too much into the midfield.

2. Edin Dzeko : The Bosnian international is currently the joint top goal scorer in World Cup Qualifying in the whole world and has scored goals v QPR, Southampton, Real Madrid for Manchester City this season. He's off to a great start and he has the size, strength and skill to help the Blues. He was linked with the Blues before his move to City, but that fell through. He is the 2nd best striker to pursue.

3. Nikica Jelavic : The Croatian international is off to an immaculate start to his Everton career. He's scored a high number of goals for the Merseyside club and certainly doesn't look like slowing down. He was also high in Croatia's rank during the EURO 2012 tournament and there qualifications. He's a proven goalscorer just like the 2 above and he does have some fantastic qualities to him. He is the 3rd best striker to pursue.

Now, the reason I'm not interested in Falcao, Lewandowski and Cavani is because they are expensive players and are accustomed to scoring in their own leagues and team system. Cavani would be tough to build around as Napoli plays a completely different style then us, same for Falcao. Lewandowski, too. Dzeko, Benzema and Jelavic have scored many goals for different teams and different leagues and this proves their capability to lead us up front or be Nando's ideal backup. For example : Dzeko was top goal scorer or 2nd top goal scorer 2 seasons in a row when he was at Wolfsburg. He's also scoring goals for Manchester City in the EPL. Jelavic was the main threat for Rangers and Everton, two different leagues. Benzema was a top scorer in Lyon colors before making move to Real Madrid, where he scores goals, as well.

Those are the 3 men who I think would be great additions to the club as they bring something special and great to the table. I believe pursuing another striker would give us the depth of Manchester City and United up top. Pursue anyone you like, but these are my best fits!

What do you think? Should we pursue another striker? If not, why? If yes, who? I'd love to hear from you! (lovely rhyme ay?)

Thanks,
Ervin

  1. I agree with what you said. And like your selection. But don't think any one of them will be willing to sell. Whether Chelsea and tempt to move is another matter. United have four good strikers who are always among the goal, Welbeck, Rooney, RVP and Hernandez. City have Mario, Dzeko, Tevez and Auguero. If we want to compete at that level through out the season We have to , have to get another world class goal scorer in our ranks,

  2. City and United has real goal kings in their ranks. And if we re to compete really good with these terms. We need top tough players. FALCAO is a natural goal getter, he proved this at Porto and seems not stopping presently at A . madrid. Again, BENZEMA and DZEKO re also great individuals in the round leather game. Who can easily fit into our system of play. My problem is the possibility of their clubs willingness to sale. From Arthur Osadebe

  3. Your choices are good bets Ervin. I agree that Falcao,Cavani and Lewandowski are too expensive and that they will demand high wage demands. I would like to see Chelsea pursue Alexandre Pato. Look,I know he's injury prone but he's extremely young, plays the similar 4-3-2-1 system for Brazil, quick, clinical infront of goal and is physically strong. What about Gonzalo Higuain? I think he is a great option to play the 4-6-0 system because he drops deep, goes wide and likes to set up other team mates like Torres does. Age is also on his side and he performed physically well against City for Real Madrid.

  6. Lets go straight to Cavani..this is the only man i beleive could stand at that position due to his skillful and fast attactions.

    1. He penned a new contract and obviously his buy out claus will be huge. Please people, keep in mind that FFP is there to be considered.

  7. Quite a poor article, Ervin. I don't want Lewandowski, Cavani, Falcao, Jelavic, Benzema or Dzeko. As I said in the comments bit of the article on possible tactics, our top target should be Cesc Fabregas. We do also need a forward.

But the sort of forward that we need (because Torres plays best when he doesn't feel that his place is under threat) is a versatile one that:
    a) does not provide direct competition to Torres
    b) can play alongside Torres in our 4-2-3-1 (i.e. in the band of 3)
    c) provides cover for Torres as the main striker
    d) has age on his side and can improve
    e) won't be ridiculously overpriced

There are a few players that fit the bill. The best ones (that I can think of), in order are:
    1. Neymar (albeit expensive)
    2. Stevan Jovetic
    3. Andre Schurrle
    4. Thomas Muller
    5. Jose Callejon
    6. Bojan Krkic (maybe not quite good enough yet)

Those are the forwards that I think Chelsea should be pursuing, and I wouldn't be surprised to see at least one of those players at Chelsea some time in the next 12 months.

What do you think? Have I gone mad? Am I a genius? Are any of my targets useless? Is there anyone else that you think Chelsea should go for? I'll be very happen to hear your opinions.

    1. I can't agree with anything you said especially since you called my article "poor". Have a good day.

    2. Sorry Ervin, just my opinion. I read just about all the articles posted on CFC360 and have almost never agreed with anything you have written. Shayne Dias and Sherry Philips tend to produce excellent articles, as do most of the writers for CFC360. But the vast majority of what you write, Ervin, is honestly awful.

    3. Lol Ervin I think you should learn more about football my friend. This guy has a point. I also couldn't agree with most of the stuff you wrote in the past, especially tactics.

  8. The player we need is Demba Ba. A proven EPL striker, big, strong(in the mold of Didier Drogba) and a bargain buy at £7million.

  10. If you say Falcao shud be let go then ur wrong, instead of Jelavic i wud prefer Dem Baba, Falcao cud be gotten for 40m nd Benzema wudnt be let go by Mardrid for less.

  12. I think the era of spending huge amount of money to get a player of choice (like Torres) should be over. Drogba was bought for £24M and we reaped the benefit. l think Shevy and El Nino's cases should have thought us a lesson. the higherst striker £30M

  13. Looks like Dzeko grabbed yet another goal for Manchester City and Jelavic added 2 to his goal column. Benzema scored in midweek for RMadrid. "Bad choices" alright. HA!

    1. Ervin, you fool. None of us are saying that Karim Benzema, Edin Dzeko or Nikica Jelavic are poor players. But they are NOT what Chelsea need.

Jelavic is the poor man's Radamel Falcao. Decent movement, not the quickest but a good instinctive finisher. A poacher, in other words. This sort of striker goes totally against our new philosophy of slipping in through balls for the striker.

Dzeko? Never. He is a reasonably good finisher, and very good at holding the ball up with his back to goal. However, he has no turn of pace. The poor man's Didier Drogba. A definite no.

Karim Benzema is different. If Chelsea did sign him (which is extremely unlikely) I do think he'd do quite well. He is fast, quite strong, and very clinical. He is also very much a team player, and still gets a very good goal tally. And I think he would slot in quite nicely into our new system. But there are two huge problems with Karim Benzema.
      1) Torres. He and Benzema cannot play together in a 4-2-3-1. We don't want Fernando benched, and Benzema would do that. We could play two up front, Benzema and Torres. That might actually work, but it would
      a) mean other players would be forced out of position, and
      b) never happen.
      2) Price. Karim Benzema's price tag would be GIGANTIC. He would set us back £50m plus, maybe as much as £60m. We simply cannot afford to be kicked out of the Champions League for breaking FFP rules. His wages would also be astronomical, at least £10m per year. Not a good idea.

I have patiently explained the obvious, Ervin, and I sincerely hope that you can see what is staring us all in the face. What Chelsea needs up front is someone like a Stevan Jovetic: young, quick, versatile, affordable, skilful, creative.

      Have a good day.

    2. Jovetic isn't affordable.. he runs at the same price as Dzeko (25). He's a little cheaper than Benzema (30) but is 3 times the amount as Jelavic (8). We need proven goal scorers that are good for the money. Falcao is the ideal option, but 48million is too much,IMO. Why would you start Torres along with Benzema? That's idiotic. We need 1 striker to backup Torres. Dzeko does that for City extremely well, Benzema, like you said, is ideal. Jelavic is an even better target. Cheap, scores, versatile, fast. Jelavic cost Everton 5m, they would sell him for under 10 I presume. Also, there is no way in hell that Benzema would have wages of 10m per year. Ronaldo gets 10m per year with endorsements and everything. Learn some facts, bud.

    3. Jelavic isn't a poacher by the way. Have you seen him play? I watch him, Dzeko and Benzema every week. Nikica certainly gets A LOT of through balls and slots them home. He does poach as well, but what striker doesn't? Dzeko is not a poor man's Drogba. Edin Dzeko is a world-class striker. He scores goals left and right for City and Bosnia. He is certainly not a poor man's Drogba. He is like Anelka, but better. Makes runs, scores goals, strong on the ball and thrives on set pieces but doesn't take them. Drogba has taken PKs, FKs, corners, etc. Dzeko never has. Benzema is the ideal target, but Dzeko and Jelavic are my 2 and 3.

      Delete
    4. Yes, Jelavic is a poacher. Nothing more than that, albeit a good poacher. Almost all of his goals are one-touch finishes, that is what a goal poacher does. Papiss Cisse, Radamel Falcao and Mario Gomez are similar but better, not that I want any of those.

What are you saying about Dzeko? Makes runs (from time to time), scores goals, strong, good from set pieces (and crosses). That is exactly what Drogba was, but Didier was better. And Edin Dzeko is NOTHING like Nicolas Anelka. They both get decent goal tallies, but that is where the similarities end. And even if Dzeko was a player who would vaguely fit the bill (which he isn't) he would be very expensive in terms of both wage and salary.

      You're getting worse, Ervin.

      Delete
    5. Continuing from where I left off, don't even start saying that I need to be learning the facts (about Ronaldo). His salary is over £15m per year, reduced considerably after tax. Plus, he makes an additional £15m per year (roughly) from sponsorship. So stop trying to be smart.

Because Benzema's wages, and fee, would sadly be a very long way above the £30m and £100k/week wages that we would hope for. For a start, can you really imagine Real Madrid selling him? He cost £35m, so they'd want a decent profit, especially given his brilliant goals-to-games ratio. And Benzema's departure would leave them with only one recognised striker (Higuain), although Ronaldo and Callejon can play up front at a push.

As another pointer, Real Madrid have said after media linking Higuain and Ronaldo with exits, they could only be purchased at their respective buyout clauses of €150m and €1bn. Gauge their valuation of Benzema from that, not your own imagination.

The reason why I would consider starting Torres with Benzema (if Chelsea ever sign him), though it seems far too obvious to be worth stating, is that the two of them are two of the best strikers in the world. Neither would want to be left on the bench, and neither would deserve to be.

It may be a totally different scenario, but Man United didn't buy Van Persie to rotate with Rooney. The two of them will be one of the most feared partnerships in history if they can click, which I expect them to. Benzema and Torres wpuld be a similar thing. They would be two of Chelsea's best players, so they would start.
Football teams have a tendency to play their best players. And if you can't work out why, Ervin, you need a psychiatrist.

By the way, Stevan Jovetic's buyout clause is a meagre £22m. I have no idea why nobody has triggered it yet, but that is his price and that is affordable for a player whom Chelsea could get 12 years at the highest level from.

  14. I think my targets are doing much much better than yours and are much much better for the money/position that is needed. I'm not going to bother to read your "facts" when none of them are right. Jovetic is not 22m. Read up. Good day and I'll not be responding to you, anymore.
