Radamel Falcao - Necessity or quenching of ego? |
The Daily Mail isn't the most trusted of sources but many fans have been cribbing for months for something exactly like this. People have begun to become impatient with Fernando Torres and despite a good start to this season many are of the opinion that Falcao will help Chelsea in their push to claim silverware this season.
In my honest opinion though, he will cause more harm than good.
Let me get this straight. He is at this point, one of the most deadliest natural strikers in the world. One who can cause destruction in a blink of an eye. He hammered us in Monaco and could probably do it again but we do not need him.
We have had a host of talented youngsters. Many of whom have been wasted, with Fabio Borini and Scott Sinclair being prime examples. We have a certain young Belgian on loan at West Bromwich Albion.
Romelu Lukaku was bought to London for a fee of 18 million and that to just for an 18 year old. He has pitched in impressive performances for his temporary club, including a header against Liverpool where he humiliated the Merseyside veteran, Jamie Carragher.
Now like I usually analyse, I weighed both the negatives and the positives. I'll start of with the positives.
#1 No more shakiness upfront -
Torres has had a good start but not a brilliant start. People are still backing him to score 20+ goals , including me but with someone like Radamel Falcao in our strike force, we can be sure that we have someone on the score-sheet every single time.
#2 Our go-to guy -
You would probably not take me seriously if I told you that we could trust on Torres to give us goals right when we needed them. When the situation is bad and everything is against us, we need one man to step up, lift our hearts and force the opposition goalkeeper to pick the ball from his net.
That man used to be Drogba and Torres CAN replace him but if we are to capture Falcao, we could easily have our man. As the stats say, Falcao has grabbed the most number of goals this season in La Liga , ahead of "the guy who has never scored against us" and "the guy who got his penalty saved by Cech in Moscow"
#3 Psychologically intimidating -
Every top club out there is after him. City, PSG, Zenit and other clubs who are financially banked by rich owners. The inclusion of him in the line-up sends a clear message to everyone. We mean business. The sight of him running right at you is enough to send chills down your spine.
With him on your side you have an advantage over the opponent that plays on their mind. Useful to say the least.
#4 Why? Because its Chelsea, thats why ! -
If there's a top player out there who can only be moved by big bucks, then expect Roman Abramovich near him. With the inclusion of PSG and City in the queue leading to the cash counter of the transfer market, we can assert our dominance again and send a clear message that Chelsea cannot be easily trifled with, when it comes to money.
Negatives? Here's mine,
# 1 FFP (Financial Fair Play Rule ) -
With the amount of money Roman Abramovich has spent to get Marin, Oscar, Moses, De Bruyne and Hazard to ply their trade at the Bridge, we have used up all the money we got from our win in Munich.
With UEFA and Platini trying to punish teams for spending out of their means, we have to make sure that we spend money only if we can ensure profit.
With a re-invigorated Torres, a recovering Sturridge and a hungry Lukaku there are few reasons of spending money and incurring the wrath of the officials just for buying another striker.
# 2 Sheva - Nando experience -
Our experiences of watching a frustrated Shevchenko and Fernando has made us aware of the fact that sometimes the weight of money can be a huge pressure for some of the players. Falcao has never been subjected to a big move before and what if his mind plays tricks with him?
What if he starts to misfire and see's money bags all around him? What if his lethal touch loses its shine ?
A reason we all have to consider.
# 3 ..... kill two birds with one stone? -
Imagine a situation like this. Fernando loses his hunger for goals and goes back to the days where he was overshadowed by Drogba when Falcao enters the Cobham training ground. At the same time, the media and fans are expecting big things from Falcao and he succumbs to pressure.
At such a point, we are left only with Sturridge and an option of playing False 9 .
Don't barge me by saying that I'm wishing bad luck on two talented strikers ! Just citing a possibility.
# 4 Might hinder transition? -
Chelsea are going through a phase of transition where they say their final goodbyes to the mighty "Munich conquering" old guard.
Chelsea are trying to fulfill Abramovich's dream of beautiful football and its getting close to reality. Hazard, Mata, Oscar and Torres understand each other so well that it is hard to realize that these players have known each other only for the past few months.
By bringing on Falcao we can cause disruption in this process. Something that can be devastating for our form .
So with everything said and done, I believe that most of us just want him to quench our ego's. Not saying that we are egoistic but because we have sub consciously become one. We have always bought players, sometimes for no reason whatsoever. That is the Chelsea way of football but in the present climate we have to move on from it.
The best thing to do, is to asses our options. Wait till a week before the transfer window to decide what we have to do. We might just wrap up the deal tomorrow and next we know that Torres grabs 20 goals before the window opens up ! Patience is key , and my opinion would be that we get a striker on loan , who is in form and ready to sit on the bench or recall Romelu Lukaku if the situation gets worse !
Come on Chelsea ! Carefree since 1905.

We don't need him.
ReplyDeleteAgreed !
Deleter u kidin me?... Falcao as not been subjected to a big money move.Where were u wen athletico madrid splash 40m€ on him.you're jus bein too negative, jus becos nando had a hard time doesnt mean he might too.bt still i'll take neymar over falcao anyday.
ReplyDeleteBy saying big money move, I meant a move involving money + a big European club. I think I should have mentioned that. Sorry !
DeleteAs I said its all just a possibility ! Hope nothing like that happens to him.
Can i have a website to download 'Blue is the colour' for free
ReplyDeleteGreat article, Sherry, totally agree with almost everything you say. The only thing I don't agree with is your opinion on FFP. We have signed so many huge, lucrative sponsorship in the last few months, our income must be going through the roof. I'm sure we'd be perfectly secure financially whether or not we do indeed buy Falcao.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, the success of any potential deal would hinge on how good RDM is. He would need to:
a) have the man-management skills to keep Falcao, Torres and Sturridge happy. And Lukaku next season.
b) come up with a system incorporating Torres, Falcao, Oscar, Hazard and Mata, while staying defensively solid. Difficult, but not impossible. I'm coming to this!
c) turn Falcao into not just a poacher but someone that can slot seamlessly into our new style of "sexy football".
None of those 3 are easy, and only the very best coaches in the world would be able to do all 3. Buying Falcao would be a huge test of Robbie coaching ability.
Now, the system that I could see working, utilising our best players in their best positions.
Cech; Azpilicueta, Luiz, Cahill, Cole; Ramires, Oscar; Mata, Hazard; Torres; Falcao.
Similar to Robbie's 4-2-3-1, but some big differences. Firstly, the Mata-Torres-Hazard bit.
Torres is a false nine, dropping deep to pick up possession while still making his runs n the shoulder of the last defender. Either he will allow our other creative midfielders acres of space to play in and thread through balls to Falcao, Hazard, Ramires and himself. Or he will pull the defence all across the pitch, giving Falcao acres of space to tear the defence to shreds.
Mata and Hazard don't change from what they already are; outstanding, creative Trequartistas.
Oscar is a Regista, and this is crucial. His excellent passing, work-rate, creativity, flair and vision mean he is potentially world class.
Ramires is what he already is; a box-to-box midfielder with an unbelievable engine. He will have to be quite restrained in attack, as he provides most of the support to the back four, who will be playing quite a high line so as not to allow to much space between our defence and midfield.
Unlike last season, our back 4 (Azpi, Luiz, Cahill, Cole) shouldn't suffer to much from a high line. All 4 have good pace and tactical awareness, so we should be fine.
And our two wing-backs will be flying forward to help out with the attack to provide the width the we might otherwise lack, though playing through midfields and defences will be plan A.
Falcao must be played in his perfect position; centre-forward, receiving plenty of service in the air and on the ground, and he will invariably convert.
The only slight concern would be the apparent lack of protection offered to the defence be Oscar and Ramires, But their stamina, work-rate, understanding, creativity, vision and flair should more than compensate.
So if Robbie can work a system something like that, while keeping everyone happy and sensibly rotating the squad, BRING ON FALCAO!
I like your analysis, maybe because we share the same view. We really don't need Falcao! Just recall Lukaku and just like that our striker problem is solved.
ReplyDelete#FFP is something we have to consider, we can't keep splurging like we usually do.
I'm sorry but with all your cons to getting Falcao are simplify blasted out of the water with this single statement: we can't rely on an inconsistent striker and we need a forward who can score most weeks if we want to have any chance of any silverware. Just because we one the Champions League once doesn't mean we'll win it again (especially how we did it). We need to keep progressing and to do this we must invest in a reliable and consistent goalscorer and Falcao ticks all the boxes...
ReplyDeleteMuch as i would like to see this happen i feel it is all paper talk again .
ReplyDeleteWe are going to sign a striker in January but it will be either Remy or Huntelaar neither of which should trouble Torres or Sturridge or even Lukaku for that matter .
If we are going to splash big bucks i would rather we continue our pursuit of Neymar as our currant Brazilians seem to be doing a decent job of tapping him up as Alves is doing the same for Barca .
To Falcao though lets be realistic as far as wages we cannot compete with PSG or City and lets not forget we have Lukaku and De Bruyne back in the Summer and we are going to have a very scary attacking force with or without Falcao .
Thank you Michael. Falcao will just be a waste of money in my opinion. This new Chelsea side doesn't need another target man type of striker. Neymar will be perfect for the false 9 system.
ReplyDeleteThis is meant to be a reply to the guy/girl who says Chelsea should try and play Falcao and Torres together but it seems I can't use the reply option. Firstly, you can't play two natural strikers in a 4-2-3-1 system. It just won't work because there won't be much of the creative spark you see now with Mata,Hazard and Oscar. Why do you want to hinder their chemistry? Where will Torres play? Just behind Falcao or out wide? The most sensible option would obviously be behind Falcao...but then Falcao won't get much service from the hole where Mata and Oscar are capable of doing the job perfectly. You can't just change a natural striker into a playmaker,it's impossible! Besides,Falcao and Torres won't co-exist. I'll expect Torres to hand in a transfer request. My friend, theories are great in the head but it's damn unrealistic in real life.
ReplyDeleteI was the one with the idea of playing Torres and Falcao together. To be clear, I'd much rather have Fabregas or even Neymar joining Chelsea in January, but if Falcao is the player we sign, you'd have to consider Torres and Falcao in the same team, simply because they're two world-class strikers. My idea was Torres as a false 9 and Falcao as a centre-forward. I think that could be devastatingly good, but it would probably end up being something resembling Man City's system.
DeleteThe keeper and back four are obvious; Oscar and Ramires are our GarcÃa and Touré; Mata and Hazard are our Nasri and Silva; Torres and Falcao are our Tevez and Aguero. I know that our midfield looks very lightweight, but I don't think that would be a big problem.
We've seen the success that City have had with this system something between 4-2-2-2 and 4-2-3-1, so why couldn't Chelsea execute it with Falcao in the side? Our line-up looks stronger than City's, if you ask me.
Good bye to Torres then. I think Falcao would fit into our system perfectly because of his experience with spanish football. Falcao is not really a pure target man like Caroll, Crouch. Or Drogba I think he is just a complete world class striker. I think the best thing Chelsea can do is to sell Torres because the psychological damage has dominated him, spread to fans and the opposition.

ReplyDeleteTorres is doing great so far.
DeleteSome fans have to stop dreaming about Falcao, I really think he won't come to Chelsea.
ReplyDeleteThe truth is that we cannot rely on Torres anymore: we have to sell him. Secondo, Sturrige wants to move on in january for sure: Sturrige will be sold in january to liverpool, so tell me, do you want chelsea to rely on ONE stricker? We can even replace him by Lukaku, I think it is not bad idea but torres is NOT GOO ENOUGH!
ReplyDeleteTorres is also world class or have you forgotting because of an inconsistant 18 months? This Falcao-media hype sucked you in since that night in Monaco. What happened to Cavani now plastic fans? Didn't the media also suck you in when he was linked to Chelsea everyday. Stop being sheep by following the spell of the media everytime they link a play to us. Think!
ReplyDelete6 goals, 4 assists, great work rate, many chances created. It's sad that
Deletesome people never get satisfied.
Very much agreed Abel !
DeleteThey don't know football, they only know basics or what they see that an attack build to a striker. They can't see that there's different goal scorers in the side. I'm just suprised they don't call for Cavani anymore like they did during the transfer window.
ReplyDelete''I'm just suprised they don't call for Cavani anymore like they did during the transfer window.''
DeleteIt's funny actually, it shows how fickle they are.
Now let us be realistic, we need the best and we have so many good options. As soon as we are linked to a player, the scouting begins. We have seen Cavani, Jovetic, Schurrle, Neymar, Hulk, Chicharito, Falcao etc and it would be very foolish not to put Neymar and Falcao on top of the list. But we all know that Neymar is for the future but Falcao is the present. If you talk about Chelsea for the next 5 years, then Falcao ticks the box. His consistency is incredible and his finishing is from another planet of the likes of Messi and Ronaldo. He is the best Striker in the world and Chelsea is one of the biggest teams in Europe lacking a top striker. Chelsea and Falcao are meant for each other and besides, do you think Abramovich would embark on a project to already be denied the title by the bookmakers because of the lack of a deadly striker? This is no Arsenal, wake up! Wake Torres up before its too late. We can only talk, its not within our powers to do anything.
ReplyDeleteLooking at it from a new light, I think we should get Falcao to liberate Torres. If Falcao comes in, Torres would no longer be special nor feel different expensively hence, he would try to give his old shoes to Falcao. If it works negatively, then Torres must be sold because Chelsea's strike force thrives on competition. How many better players were brought in to compete with Drogba? How many for Torres? None.
ReplyDeleteA very different view point and I agree with it ! He can use some stiff competition .
DeleteTorres is doing fine but we need Falcao if we want to grab any silverware
ReplyDeleteYeah, especially if Man City are serious about him.
ReplyDeleteWe need falcao. A necessity i see us winning a lot of silverware this season with him in our dream team. Wont be surprised if we buy him.
ReplyDeleteTorres dont need to score all the goals for us to win silverwares, as we have seen this season, our new style has shown that every player has the ability to score, i think chelsea shud stick wit torres..
ReplyDeleteMy opinion is that this and next season toers I will not be able to deliver a job in the attack, so we will need a class striker and currently go to El Tigre Falcao is no better in the world. Extremely high competition will be to bring him to the club because everyone is interested and his current club will work out of the financial problems tražitiveoma great compensation for it, so there remains the question of how to succeed in it, but if it does not work over the winter should try in the summer transfer window to be brought. With the current midfield that promises so much and that is the way the game has changed so many of our club is our genius Walls and CAVES RDM revolutionized the club and the Club uospte in history there is a good chance to become the best midfielders in the world in a very short time! With players such as the Mata, Oscar, Hazard, Moses and the standard Ramires will be a murderous combination of such attackers could supply the class with balls that pierced the network and monitors were the terror of the defenders and the goalkeeper and the team and the team placed additional dimension and paved the way for the club more titles in the coming years. Striker Falcao as it has just all the numbers of the current one in the world, has a keen sense of achievement goals including, killer instinct, speed, kick that goes into the goal and always in the opposite side of the keeper, very well built in the attack, easily matter of chance and the fear factor for opponents is huge! This is currently the only striker who can give that dimension you gave Drogba but otherwise it's a revolution in the team and the club in a completely new game system and higher so that Falcao is necessary to achieve this goal! Greetings from Serbia - Belgrade for all true fans of our club!
ReplyDeleteJust buy huntelaar in January to help Torres. That should be enough
ReplyDeleteTotally agree with this article. All i can say is lets be "PATIENT". but i know the Owner is not patient as we are or i am because for me personally, Fernando Torres is our NUMBER 9. Yea, at times he(Torres) is very frustrating in front of goals but i trust in him. If instead of him, we can use Sturridge or Lukaku. They both got immense talent and we can give room for our youngsters too to shine. And last we should think of the FFP. KTBFFH!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI think we should play 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3 at the same time in sort of way. With romeu, or if robbie continues to reject him we have to buy, either fellani or paulinho. I say this because I really don't like mikel. We should have oscar ahead of him, with torres. So oscar and torres have free rolls in the middle. Mata and hazard do their stuff cutting inside from the wide, and then the full back pushing up. Then have falcao up front, or we could have lukaku or neymar if we buy him, or even moses, or sturridge! With marin, ramires as back we would be very good.
ReplyDeleteRotflmao! Torres a midfielder? The guy can't tackle for his life! Your team is so unbalanced,it will be ripped to shreads by even the weakest of opponents. Where's your sweeper? Even my team here will trouble your team with dangerous counter attacks.
DeleteLol, is it video games and simulators you guys are using as a yardstick to judge our players? The terminology is the same though and the players ability are close to accurate for a fair percentage but the dynamics are still not close at all. For instance, I will never use Mikel in my team on console because he is very slow and his stats are not so good. But in real live you can see he is solid in the position.
