Romeu is a defensive midfielder with an immense potential. While in Barcelona, Romeu made his debut for the first team in the Club World Cup against Sevilla. Although Barcelona suffered a 3-1 defeat in the match, Romeu's performance was more than satisfactory. However, due to Sergio Busquets and Javier Mascherano being the first choice defensive midfielders at Barcelona, Romeu could not get any more chances there. But his performance against Sevilla was enough for Andre Villas-Boas to recognise his potential and bring him to Chelsea.
Romeu has some very impressive attributes. He is strong, despite his age and can even take on some of the toughest players in Europe. His passes are short, fast and effective. He has the ability to place key passes accurately and create opportunities for the attackers to launch attacks on the opposition. He can pair up with players well to exploit gaps and create scoring opportunities. His defence too is extremely good and he can effectively cut out passes and create problems for the opposition attackers.
Despite of all his good qualities he does have a couple of problems. He is inexperienced and had lots of problems in settling into the English Premier League. He was unable to get used to the rough style of football played in England and needs to work on that. Also, sometimes he makes some very rash tackles and gets booked for no reason. This is a problem as such tackles can concede penalties close to our goal and that is always a problem.
Considering his age however, Romeu can surely overcome these drawbacks. As a player, he is mainly in the mould of Sergio Busquets (except for the diving skills). His style of playing and his mentality are similar to Busquets. In the 4-2-3-1 formation being used by Roberto Di Matteo, Romeu can certainly be very effective as one of the two deep lying midfielders. Pairing up Obi Mikel or Oscar, he can be a real threat to the opposition. Di Matteo did not play Romeu much last season as the matches being played were extremely crucial and needed experience which Romeu lacks. Also, he did not perform as well as he can towards the end of last season and due to Mikel and Lampard's excellent performances as deep mids, did not get many chances.
Romeu will surely need some time to develop and get used to English football but I can see him being a regular in our starting XI in about 1-2 years if he is given the right exposure and nurtured well. Romeu will surely have to fight for a spot in the starting team with Mikel, Lampard, Essien, Oscar all competing him but he can surely earn a spot for some of the Capital One Cup and Premier League matches. Romeu is one of the many young players at Chelsea and will certainly be an important of the team that we are nurturing. With the potential that he has, he is almost certain to be one of the best players Chelsea has ever had.

I use to call Barcelona the diving champions at the end of the 2010-2011 season and Bousquets as the king of diving. I'm glad more people agree with me. Back to the topic...our current first choice pivot,Mikel and Lampard are slow and I'm pretty sure most people will agree with me. In my opinion,Lampard and Mikel excelled because we played ultra defensive games. Now look,I know it was mostly only the Barca and Munich games when we played very deep but we played the usual long ball to Drogba tactic. Mikel didn't have to do much other than to defend. Everything has changed since then because we have more attack minded players waiting upfront for an accurate pass. I'm sure we all know Mikel is slow on the turn and forward passes isn't his thing. This is where Romeu can seriously play Mikel out of the starting line up if he's consistent. I really hope Romeu gets his deserved chance to help the team in the transition from defense to attack from this crucial position on the pitch. Cheers.
