Chelsea FC: The youth problem

Chelsea FC: The youth problem
In Chelsea, we have this philosophy, and that philosophy is buying already experienced players and leaving out our youth players, who usually end up leaving the club. We lack the patience in waiting for those players to mature and become the great players that they can potentially be. If you look at our team, in every position we have very experienced players, making it virtually impossible for a Chelsea youth to break in the squad. The last real Chelsea youth to break in the squad was John Terry. Yeah, that's how bad it is. We sold young players who had the potential to become Chelsea legends.

Fabio Borini: Born in 1991, Fabio Borini joined Chelsea on a trial in 2007, after he impressed the Chelsea scouts while he was playing in the Bologna youth system. After succeeding in the trial he went on to the Chelsea reserves, where he was a top scorer and was rated highly only after Gael Kakuta. His chances were limited at Chelsea because of Carlo Ancelotti's huge reliance on old experienced players in the likes of Drogba, Ballack and Lampard. He would only go on to make 8 appearances in the senior level and all of them as a  substitute. A loan to Parma, then a move to Roma where he scored 10 goals in 26 appearances, caught they eye of the Liverpool chiefs. He would later sign with Liverpool and score on his Anfield debut just yesterday.

Scott Sinclair: Chelsea signed Scott Sinclair in 2005, he would then immediately sent to the Reserves squad, but after several loans Plymouth Argyle, Birmingham and Wigan, it was clear to Chelsea that he was not a player up to their standard. He only made 13 appearances for Chelsea and scored  1 goal. The Chelsea "youth experts" saw it fit that Sinclair had to be sold. And so he was, in 2010, Sinclair was sold to Swansea, where he would make a total of 90 appearances and score 35 goals, a stat every winger would be proud of.

Do you see the pattern here? Buy young, place in reserves, send on loan, SELL. This is a system that we use on all reserve and youth players. How long will it be until we see Lucas Piazon loaned and sold? How long will it be until we see McEachran loaned and sold? How long will it be until we see Nathaniel Chalobah, Sam Hutchinson, Jamal Blackman, Billy Clifford, Islam Feruz loaned and sold?

Chelsea need a change of philosophy in terms of how they handle youth players, we need to nurture them to become experienced players that can help the team in the future. These players are not given the opportunity in order to show the Chelsea faithful what they can do. They are loaned and sold before they can prove what they can give to the club.

  1. I agree with you. But I think it's really difficult to change the club philosophy who wants to win as many trophies as possible. Looking at Barca makes me envy.

  2. Youth problem? Mcecran ,Piazon, Geal, Lukaku -- what youth problem? Plenty more where that came from. I know what u mean tho, Chelsea is a big club the way we finance our club is important to win,not end all be all,but billions have been spent and u got to maintain. First team is high caliber and when d youth turn 21 22 they will get their chance.. bertnard is throw.. Our history is being written and still early in dynsti.it will happend, give it time. With borini if we didnt buy Sturridge he would be here and I rather Daniel anyway....Sinclair is he good enough,is it romance, will he return one day- lets hope let's see. We don't have a youth problem we just Young.

    1. That's exactly my point. Many talented youngsters yet we dont use them properly.

  3. We lost a lot of those players under Ancelotti and allegedly Borini and him did not see eye to eye to add insult to injury we offered Borini a pretty bad contract .
According to RDM this season Piazon will be added to the first team but i wish we would make Todd Kane the back up to Ivanovich .
Although the future looks good for youth under RDM he himself needs a good season to secure his position .

  4. You can't expect what's happenig in Arsenal in Chelsea for many reasons: *Chelsea is a big club dat fight 4 every available cup in a season, since guners's adopted dis philosofy, av dey won anythin? Chelsea fans can't exercise such patience & u,re part

  5. U cannot compare player that is upgraded from the youth team to the ready-made that we buy... Can U compare the loyalty of John Terry to any other big player in Chelsea? No way... So, until we learn to cherish wat we have we might not really get 2 where the big guns really are... Fabregas left Arsenal for Barça bcos that was his home, even Romue was willing 2 go back 2 Barça bcos that where he started & was willing 2 pay back... So let's learn to love wat we have...

  6. i believe that the youth players are skilled but the system is awful, look at some other clubs, they bring players through the training not immediately loan them to some low prestige club or another place they might play keyword (might) i feel Chelsea is a very strong club in their first team but they need to train their youth for a while before loaning them away for 6 months or a season. although somehow without youth Chelsea has pulled through by buying players such as Eden Hazard and Juan Mata who have in my opinion have kept this team alive.
