Match Report: Chelsea 2-3 Man City

Some good news
So after all the build up and the hype, the season opener is finally here. It was supposed to be a full house at Villa Park as per many reports but empty seats could be spotted. City announced right before the game that they have closed in on their new signing Jack Rodwell from Everton.

When the line-ups came up there was no real surprise from the Chelsea end as the obvious XI started- Cech, Ivanovic, Luiz, Terry, Cole, Lampard, Mikel, Ramires, Mata, Hazard, Torres.
For Manchester City, things did not look that great with Joe Hart,Lescott and obvious absentees in Balotelli and Richards all forced out. Silva managed to make the bench.- Pantilimon, Zabaleta, Kompany, Savic, Milner, De Jong, Yaya,Clichy, Nasri, Aguero, Tevez

City kicked off the Community Shield in their new Burgundy color jersey whereas Chelsea were dressed in their traditional Blue. In continuation to their odd pre-season tactics, City started the game with 3 defenders with Zabaleta playing as the CB. It did not start off well for Mancini’s side as Fernando Torres opened the scoring for the European Champions after some neat work by Ramires and slightest of touches by Hazard.

Two minutes later the game suddenly swung in City’s favor with Ivanovic getting sent off by fouling Alexander Kolarov. Many suggest it was a dubious decision by referee Kevin Friend but to be honest it looked like a red card since it was a two-footed tackle.

The Second half kicked off and City quicky took control of the game with Yaya Toure scoring early on after some poor clearance by captain John Terry. It was the first of the 3 stunning goals City scored in the second half. City continued to impress with City’s rebel boy Carlos Tevez scoring an absolute stunner to put the Citizens ahead. It was a well worked move by Tevez as he blazed past 3 Chelsea players to score an absolute scorcher.

In the 66th minute Nasri all but insured City’s first silverware after he finished off a well worked move by Kolarov. Kolarov set it up with a cross from the left wing and Nasri got himself into a perfect position to place the ball past Petr Cech.

Chelsea made 2 quick substitutions with new boy Eden Hazard who had a very average game being replaced by Ryan Bertrand and Juan Mata being replaced by Danny Sturridge.

The 2 substitutes combined pretty well to give Chelsea a lifeline late on after Ryan Bertrand scored his first senior goal for Chelsea. Fellow substitute Sturridge ripped a shot from outside the box to force an error of keeper Pantlimon and Sturridge was the quickest to react.

City managed to hold on to their and won their 1st piece of Silverware. As for Chelsea there were a few positives from this game with Bertrand and Sturridge both looking sharp and not to forget Fernando Torres who still has his European golden boot on.

Our video report would be out soon so don't forget to watch that!
