In yesterday's Community Shield match between Chelsea and Manchester City, City emerged victorious with a 3-2 win. Many of the Chelsea players did not exactly perform as well as they can and should have. The defence was shaky and there were too many mistakes. Many fans went on to say "it's only pre-season" which shocked me. This is no preseason any longer and so it was quiet a relief to see that there was one player who stood out and played extremely well for us. That was Fernando Torres.
Ever since his big money transfer (£50m) from Liverpool to Chelsea in January 2011, there have been great expectations from Torres, and rightly so. However, his first six months at the club were a bitter disappointment. When the 2011-12 season began, there were hopes that Torres would regain his form and do great for us. But he was repeatedly outclassed by Didier Drogba and did not perform upto his potential. He didn't look sharp & kept missing simple opportunities (who can forget that disaster of a miss against United). Under Andre Villas-Boas, Torres was nowhere near what people expected him to be. When RDM took over, he changed our style. Although Drogba was preferred over Torres in the important matches, Torres did well when he was given the chance. He even netted his first hat trick in a blue shirt against Queens Park Rangers. He was regaining some of his old form.
During the summer, Torres was a part of Spain's Euro squad. He impressed everyone with his performances there and even walked away with the Golden Boot for being the tournament's highest scorer. However many Chelsea fans, me included, needed to see him perform well for us before they could believe in him. He has indeed disappointed in the past.
The Community Shield match, however, was not one of those days. Torres was in a great form that day. He was continually making runs with the ball. He was very confident on the pitch. He made sure that City's defenders were unable to relax even for a moment. Pairing up with Juan Mata and Eden Hazard, Torres continuously threatened City. In the 40th minute, Ramires, using amazing footwork and ball control, went past his marker in City's penalty area and crossed the ball to Torres. Torres with his old confidence back, swiftly, and with great technique, flicked the ball past the goalkeeper and into the net. After scoring that goal, Torres started playing with renewed confidence. He was almost like his old self, making runs, trying to get the ball in a shooting position, going past defenders (albeit he tried to do too much sometimes). Although his goal was the only shot he had on the goal in the match, his overall performance was quite satisfactory. This kind of confidence and performance from Torres will go a long way in making sure Chelsea win trophies this season. Whether Fernando Torres is back to his scoring ways, only time will tell. But he is certainly on the way to a great season with Chelsea.
Till then KTBFFH!

Ooh yes he is back , Torres is not motivated by competing for a place in the squad but by having security that there is a place for him .
ReplyDeleteI am not too worried about the season,I'm actually hyper excited as far as our front four is concerned [4-2-(3-1)]. Take a look at the Brazilian Olympic starting eleven for the magority of the time. Damiao upfront with Oscar,Neymar and Hulk behind him. He flourished and isn't even as clinical as Torres is. Now look at our team. Torres upfront with Hazard,Mata and Oscar behind in. All of them behind Torres are playmakers so he should, should get quality service and be one of the league's top finishers. We can just imagine and wait to see how those four perform, especially Oscar's ability to control games and marshall the final third with his pass and move play. When Oscar does that,Lampard can switch forward at times and make runs into the box or let the playmakers make play for him to have a long range pop at goal. Man,i wish i was a coach!
ReplyDeleteMay be you can try to do something considering your age, you no, coaching is not an easy task but judging from your saying i think you can coach. Man think about it. In fact am really impress about the information my good friend gave, and i believe my main man Torres is gonna do well this season with the likes of Oscar, Matta, Lampard, Ramiries and the Hazardious man, it's just gonna be fantastic season for us the BLUES. BLUES, BLUES BLUES the Masters.
ReplyDeletewe ave a very good squad bt i still see d need 4 either neymar or hulk.look at wat hapen against city if we had play 2 wingers city whould ave bin in serious trouble.u can c wat hazard did 2 dem
ReplyDeleteWe did try to do that, if you remember. Ramires started as a genuine right-winger, but he had to drop back to RB after Ivanovic was sent off (which was never, ever a red card). At RB he had to sacrifice his attacking engine as Mata moved to RM, but that certainly isn't Mata's best position, hence little threat in the second half other than Hazard and Torres.
DeleteTorres will perform this season.
ReplyDeleteeven if he doesn't play well, i can see scoring at least 20 goals this season
ReplyDeleteYeah good analysis. Ramires was the most productive winger in that match and it was such a shame he had to cover for right back. I think Ramires deserves a starting spot in the team, that's why we shouldn't get Hulk who would automatically relegate him to the bench. So far as the team is concerned, CF and RWF are booked. Maybe back ups though. For the non booked, we still have RB, DM and maybe CM.
ReplyDeleteWe have to stop saying he's back. We said that a hundred times already, I think we should wait a couple of months and see where he's at. Then we could make that judgement
