Still Early Days: Why We shouldn't get Complacent

Still Early Days: Why We shouldn't get Complacent
We started our season as most of us expected, with wins against Wigan and Reading. With 6 goals scored and 2 conceded, and a notable change in style of play, it became clear to us that Roberto Di Matteo means business in changing the playing style of the team. While we should all be happy with our start, it is only early days yet.

Let's face it, both Reading and Wigan were teams that we were expected to beat. The main challenges are still ahead. We will know how our season pans out when we play the likes of both Manchester City and United, Liverpool, Arsenal etc. We will know if our season will be a success if we win those matches. Our performance against big teams defines our season.

On to another point. Although we did win, our performances were not great. Against Wigan, after we scored those two goals early on, we were under tremendous amounts of pressure, and they came close to scoring numerous times. Our defense was incredibly sloppy and we gave them way more chances than they should have had.

Against Reading, we went a goal up, and then Reading took the lead with goals that on Petr Cech and both John Terry and Gary Cahill's best days, we would have never conceded. Again, we were giving Reading way more chances than they deserved. The sloppiness of our defense almost made the game beyond reach. We did, however, manage to win the game with incredible team spirit, but if we are struggling to give a balanced, powerful display against relegation candidate Reading and a bottom half team, Wigan. How will we perform against the top teams?

There were many positives from this. The flair and skill of Chelsea new boy Eden Hazard gave us a sign of good things to come. Fernando Torres getting back to his scoring habits with 2 goals in 3 games, and the noticeable and dramatic switch of our playing style to a more attacking flow instead of our usual conservative style. The chemistry between Hazard and Mata on the pitch was tremendous, a sign of mutual understanding that will be sure to grant us goals and wins throughout the season.

CFC 4-2 Reading
This is by no means me slagging off Chelsea as tittle contenders, nor is it me saying we aren't good enough. On the contrary, I believe we will be tittle contenders and possibly more. What I am pointing out is that we need to improve our overall display on the pitch regardless of the score, because if we continue our performance from those two games throughout the season, unfortunately, we will pay the price.

Chelsea play Newcastle at home on Saturday, and that match will show us just how prepared we are to deliver trophies to Stamford Bridge.

KTBFFH!

  1. Well, I'm not moved at all considering the fact that Mancity also struggled to overcome a relegation candidate. I was rather looking for that fighting spirit of champions which Mancity used and I'm happy I found it. For now, we are unbeaten and at the top of the league so it would only get better.

  2. Great read!!! Good point. Newcastle will be a good game and more of a test for the defence. Thou I'm sure a good rytham will come with games. We give away abit of our solid game by playing with more flair but I would rather play this way! Plus the pressing in midfield will improve hopefully!!! Fitness comes into it. Even thou hazard has great flair and quality he still works hard for the team presses and chases back!! Outstanding player. Worth every penny..

  3. Like Torres says,we must look to win our first ten games in the league to show our intent and I'm backing him on that. When we play the Arsenals,Cities,Uniteds etc,we must ensure home wins against them and ATLEAST draws away. If we can do that then we can surely be title contenders. Our goal difference is currently the best with +4 and the other big teams with +1 and lesser. That's a good thing because we can only improve it with comfortable wins over lesser teams and at the same time keeping a solid home record against our big rivals. On another note,we shouldn't play such a high line when we are pressing the opposition since we are deploying a 4-2-3-1 formation. The front four should be comfortable passing the ball around and infront of the opposition while the two deeper midfielders just lay back about 10 meters from the half way line ensuring enough pressing. That way the two centre backs and deeper midfieders can fall back quickly when the opposition counters. I'm banking this tactical theory on our pacey flair players moving the ball about with one touches and the Barca-esque triangle style, relieving pressure off the man on the ball to make a safe pass and make a run into space. Torres' goal against reading showed the quick thinking one touch football our attackers can play. Roman! Sack RDM and hire me! Lol! Just kidding.

  4. i think we have made a good start and we will remain on top of the log. We underrated both wigan and reading hence our slopiness, especially considering that we scored first in both games. When we play newcastle. I expect disciplined defending. We can also try to line up our young guys at the back; cesar, ivanovic, cahil and betrand and use essien and oriol as defensive midfielders.
