The Midfield Dilemma

The Midfield Dilemma
Many Chelsea fans think that the big selection problem for Roberto Di Matteo will be the attack. Where will he put Hazard? Will Ramires play? What about Torres? While believe selecting an attack will be a headache for Roberto, I think there is a bigger problem. I like to call it, The midfield dilemma. Our usual midfield was the pair of Frank Lampard and John Obi Mikel, who performed wonderfully during the latter part of our double winning season. However, with the arrival of Oscar, that usual midfield will probably be changed. I will be evaluating the possible line-up with their pros and cons.

Mikel-Lampard:
Pros: The major pro is going back to a set up Chelsea are used to, the ability of Lampard to both defend and attack (however slow Lampard is getting up the pitch) helps the team build up an attack. The ability of Mikel to hassle off opponents behind the midfield and bring it up the attack benefits the team.

Cons: What was saw last season in this combination, was our slow building up the attack. Both Mikel and Lampard aren't the fastest and therefore take longer to build up an attack which allows the opposing team to get back to their positions and pressure our attack.

Mikel-Oscar:
Pros: The attacking minded Oscar and the defensive minded Mikel will give the team much needed pace in the attack, the ability of Oscar to build an attack of something out of nothing is something Chelsea need greatly. With Oscar's attacking minded style and Mikel's defensive, we will be a force to be reckoned with.

Cons: This combination will affect us greatly while we are defending, because Mikel is used to play with a Lampard, someone who can support him while the other team is attacking. While Oscar is great at setting up chances, he lacks in defending, which will leave us vulnerable.

Oscar-Lampard:
Pros: All out attack. With the vision of Lampard and Oscar of setting up attacks, with the support of Mata, Hazard, Marin etc. We will be relentless in attack. Both players great vision will help us in the attack greatly.

Cons: Again we will be vulnerable in the back, without a holding midfielder in Mikel we will be very vulnerable in the defense because John Terry and co, will need an experienced holding midfielder to support them. While I believe Oscar and Lampard can do the job, it will still be a challenge, especially against the big teams.

I personally think we should field the Mikel-Oscar combination because Oscar has the vision and also has the pace to move backwards and forwards. Although we will be a bit more vulnerable in the defense, but what we lack in that, we will make up with goals.

Di Matteo obviously has a big selection headache overall, but selecting a proper midfield is something I believe he will have big problems in. Our midfield is full of talented player, but it is up to Di Matteo to pick a midfield that will make us hard to defeat.

  1. Very good article that raises some points that I haven't thought about. This is what I think would work:
Mikel & Lampard -these two start then sub in Oscar for Lamps until he gets his BPL legs or Meireles for Mikel.
But from the footage I have seen of Oscar,I think he plays a better role on the Wing, that way having him just ahead or to the left/right of Lamps, Lamps can feed him those good passes to create something out of nothing.
It still up for the test, as this is something RDM will have to really work on and find what works, then find two other alternate formations that work just as well. At this point it is all about the team coalescing and being able to play very well with two different formations in the Middle-Attack.

  2. Oscar doesn't have the pace to be a winger. He is more comfortable when he dictates the play. Besides. if he was a winger, where would Hazard, Marin play?

  4. good article, why not playing oscar as a number 10,mata on the left and hazard on the right?

  5. My preferred combination would be Ramires and Oscar, which would be by far the most dynamic combination. Ramires as a box-to-box midfielder and Oscar as a deep-lying playmaker. And Hazard, Mata and a new signing (Hulk or Neymar) in front of them, behind Torres.

Alternatively, we could sign an outstanding DLP (Xabi Alonso comes to mind), play him alongside Ramires, with Hazard, Oscar and Mata behind Nando, to make the most of Oscar's flair and creativity.

Either way, Chelsea's midfield and attack for next season looks truly world-class. And we haven't even taken into account the talents of Meireles, Essien, Romeu or McEachran. Then we have the likes of Marin, de Bruyne (on loan, I know), Malouda and Benayoun. Strength in depth if ever I saw it.

  8. Who is to say that the formation doesn't change a little. Keep in mind there is new info out on how Lamps hasn't been offered a contract renewal/extension. Essien is still alive and well. Hopefully he can stay healthy this season. He has pace and can also slam the ball from distance which opens up space when defenders are forced to close him down. Torres played very well in the Community Shield match, getting back to defend(though we did have 10 men), and also being able to hold up the ball to wait for help in the attack. And I think Ramires can also play a defensive minded role, he has great pace and is a good defender, and you might say something about his size but he does know how to use his body to gain position. How about 4-1-3-1-1? Ramires, Essien, Miereles, or Mikel; Hazard, Lampard, Marin, Bertrand, Ramires, Malouda, Romeu, or Mata; Mata, Hazard, or Marin; and Torres up top... just an idea

  9. A 4-2-3-1 with Ramires alongside Mikel or Lampard, with Mata, Oscar and Hazard occupying free roles in behind Torres is surely one of the best attacks in world football. It would be incredibly versatile - Mata, Hazard, Oscar and Ramires can play anywhere in midfield, and would bring the possesion-based game Ambramovich so craves, while amplifying the creativity to allow Torres to prove why he was a £50m signing.

  10. I tink oscar shuld be played along side mikel,if he fails we use essien or romeo, raul m to make our squared even much stronger.

  11. We always wanted a 'witsel' kind of def mid. Y not play lamps as a def mid. It wud b a double edged sword for us. Cos wit his experience, he can hold d ball, and he can even thrust for goals. I say play lamps or Rambo as a 4 and Oscar as a 8. He shud b d much sorted after 'modric' we always wanted, only dat he is younger, which shud b an advantage 4 us. Blues 4 life.

  12. i think Essien and Orial Romeo would be better choice.they both have good passing rang.and can shield our back four better than.mikel lampard.we know essien when he joins attack he can score goals as well.so he will play as box to box and romeu as pure DM player..

  13. Hehe, Mikel has the best passing range amongst them plus his pass completion rate is intimidating while his composure is too much, which he could give some to Torres and take a little urgency from him. Don't know what the Managers do tell him but he doesn't look like he is playing with much creative freedom. As for tackles, he did well reducing his aggression but it is now too low. We need some steel in the middle and I think he shouldn't be scared of getting some red like the good old days just to remind them of the fear.
