Should Chelsea Pursue Falcao?

Radamel Falcao has a lot going for him right now. He may not have the diabolic left foot of Messi, or the speed of Ronaldo, but his aerial ability is par excellence, and he does happen to be ambidextrous. A wily fox in the box, I'd say. At 26 years of age, he is arguably in his prime, and the next three or four years could yet be the best of his career. It is possible that his purchase proves to be just what the doctor ordered for Chelsea.

There is no greater pure No.9 in world football right now. Falcao combines the modern necessity for mobility and athleticism with a killer instinct and hunger for goals. He shouldn't, at 5'10'', be as good in the air as he is but Falcao combines a spring akin to that of a basketball player and movement that makes him as hard to detect as an apparition to regularly embarrass defences sent to stop him. It is alarming to think that, at 26, he has not even hit his peak yet.

It is believed that club owner Roman Abramovich is ready to sanction a deal to bring Falcao to West London come January. Given all the creative talent that the club has acquired over the summer gone by, one could be tempted to argue that the Colombian's arrival would leave the Blues with the most potent attack in Europe.

In light of this point, Radamel Falcao may not be what the club needs; he may just be diametric opposite of that. A move for him could upset the balance and harmony that Di Matteo and Eddie Newton have done so well to generate at SW6. Nonetheless, a mate of mine remarked, "If this transfer happens, it's game over for the rest in England." With that, he may be echoing the sentiments of many others. That is not only an exaggeration, but also exceedingly presumptuous on his part. We've seen big money men struggle to cut it at Stamford Bridge, and there will be a risk factor associated with Falcao too. With his tiny frame, adapting to English top flight might prove difficult for the Athletico man.

Falcao will bring goals, but could also offer Roberto Di Matteo options, something that is basically non-existent in the upfront area for the Chelsea manager at the moment. With Falcao and Torres both being world-class strikers, this gives Di Matteo an opportunity to perhaps change to a more attacking formation, should he see fit. Falcao has shown he is comfortable in a formation with two frontmen, and if Torres can get over himself and play with someone upfront with him, then Chelsea would probably have the best strike force in the world. It's very difficult to make a case for Falcao not being a prime fit for Chelsea, such is his ability in and around the box. However, the West London side are still not known for getting down the flanks and whipping in dangerous crosses - though it did become a bigger part of their game last year - and this would require an adjustment to really allow Falcao to flourish.

Prolific, powerful, skillful and good in the air. Falcao is the only attacking option Chelsea need to be looking at if they are to be dominant domestically again.

The question arrises : Should Chelsea Pursue Radamel Falcao? I say yes, what about you?

  1. I say no. It's right time to cope with the ongoing FFP rule. We already have Lukaku who costs us 18m. I know Lukaku is still far away from the level of Falcao but we can develop him. Lukaku can be brilliant for next 3-4 years if he plays regularly in the first team.

    1. Maybe Arsenal has not won trophies over the past 7-8 years but they has not been playing "normally" like you said. What they lack is the consistency. They can play brilliantly but can also play very badly.

With the attacking trio Hazard-Oscar-Mata, we are not afraid of lacking goals. Put our faith on our strikers. Torres may be struggling with his goal scoring. Sturridge is coming back. Lukaku may come back to help us in Jan. I think we can win trophies without purchasing expensively on another striker like Falcao.

  4. I think a better buy would be Lewandowski as he is only 24 and is a deadly. I am a massive Torres so dont get me wrong when I say this, but Lewandowski has most of, if not all of the features torres lacks. The big one is his pace. You write a whole article on why Lewandowski would a better buy, here are some in short: he is 24, pace, excellent in the air, deadly finisher (which is all we really need, fit the system, stress on youth in squad, start a transfer related relationship with dortmund i.e Gotze etc, cost is reported at 28-35mill....etc!

    1. The problem with going for someone younger is that you're severely hampering the first-team chances of guys like Lukaku and Feruz. Buying someone like Falcao who is at a decent age and in his prime is exactly what Chelsea need at the moment.

  5. No, he's too expensive and he's 27.

  6. Yes, but we can opt for another striker if he can cost less than falcao who is much expensive

  7. In the end it doesn't matter what we think who Chelsea should buy. I don't have a problem if Chelsea do end up getting Falcao's signature. It does have its negatives and positives. 1) We've seen what big money moves to Chelsea has done to most feared strikers in world football,Torres and Shevchenko are examples of that. 2) If Robbie wants both strikers on the pitch then the attacking trio will have to be broken up. 3) Robbie would have to find a formation to accommodate these two strikers and I will opt for 4-3-1-2 or 4-2-2-2. 4) It offers a big impact sub from the bench. 5) We will definitely have one of the most potent strikeforce in world football. Ultimately,I just hope Falcao won't mess up the new set up.

  12. One thing still baffles me. Is Chelsea planning for d future or looking for quick success? If it is for future, we don't need falcao. 2. Going down memory lane, all d world class striker Chelsea has bought ended up becoming a flop. Falcao could be d next.

    1. Thanks. Good point bra. I read a comment here on this site that time is running out! Hahaha! I wonder what the rush is. If I had to choose between Falcao and Neymar,I wouldn't think twice about signing Neymar. He is much younger like our new boys,a good investment for the long term plan, versatile and will have a much better sale value if the club wants to cash in on him in the future.
