Mata, Hazard, Oscar, Marin... Who Should Play On The Wings Or The Free-Role?

Mata, Hazard, Oscar, Marin... Who Should Play On The Wings Or The Free-Role?
This season unlike the previous ones, Chelsea have been blessed with three top talented creative midfielders in the shape of Mata, Hazard and Oscar. Although the latter (Oscar) has the ability to play on the wings and can even manage to play further deep as a deep-lying playmaker, both Hazard and Mata have shown on the field of play and even in the case of Hazard, has openly shown his preference for the nummber 10 role which was seen as a precondititon for choosing Chelsea instead of United or City. With the preferred 4-2-3-1 formation of Di Mattteo, who will you prefer to play in the middle of the 3 attacking midfielders or behind the striker in a free role and who should stay on the wings. I believe this would be some kind of headache for RDM but a positive headache for every manager to have.

One major problem for Chelsea in the past few years has been the lack of dynamism, flare and creativity in the team. This was part of the reason why when AVB took over the club made the acquistion of a creative player a priority. We all saw how well the club pursued Luka Modric till the last minutes of the transfer deadline only to be turned down by Daniel Levy. However, the capture of Juan Mata eased this problem a partially who contributed immensely to our last season campaign creating 22 assists. Although he was initially used by AVB on the wings due to his preferred 4-3-3 formation, he was sometimes used as number 10 and later when RDM took over Mata was mostly played right behind the striker as number 10, a position in which he has excelled so far. Many believe that Mata's natural position should be the number 10 role where he is given the free role to operate and offer dynamism in our team with his good eye for passes and his great understanding with Fernando Torres who will lead our attacking line this season (barring no dramatic turn of events).

Hazard on the other hand is seen as a "Messi" according to many including Thomas Vermalen of Arsenal, (his national team mate) and in the last half of the season at Lille he played behind the striker in a free role where he also excelled by assisting and scoring many for his club to qualify for the Champions League. He added to this by emerging as the best player in France. Hazard's preference for the number 10 role has not been made secret; when he was leaving Lille, he made several interviews where he made it abundantly clear of his desire to play as a number 10 where some journalists even misconstrued it to mean he wanted the number 10 jersey.

During the preseason Hazard was usually played at his preferred number 10 role but maybe it might be because of the absence of Mata. So if you happened to be in the hot shoes of Di Matteo, Hazard or Mata who will you play on the wings or the number 10 role? Do let us know. KTBFFH!

  1. It is a very difficult one but I would definitely go with Mata as a number 10 as he is proven in that position AT Chelsea and would help us win games while Hazard is adapting to Chelsea players and the PL. I would play Hazard and Marin on the wings with Oscar as a deep midfielder paired with Michael Essien or obi Mikel while using Lampard sparingly. This should work pretty well for Chelsea if Hazard accepts the fact that no matter how good he is, he is still new to the premier league and needs to be more disciplined and stick to his position on the wing.
We can always switch Mata and Hazard round when winning to help hazard adapt and see really how good he is compared to Mata.

My team would be: Cech, Cole (LB), Terry, Cahill , Ivanovic (RB) Mikel/Essien/Ramires (Def Mid), Oscar/Lampard, Marin (LW), Mata (No 10), Hazard(RW), Torres (Stike)!

  2. I would rather fix Mata on the middle cause he has proven to be very effective in that area cause he doesnt really care about anything but renderring lovely passes to others in his team but a person like Hazard loves to run and take shots so I think he shuld play LM so he can cut in and take lovely shots for chelsea

My team would be:Cech,A.Cole(LB),Terry(CB),Luiz(CB),Ivanovic(RB),Meireles(LDM),Oscar(RDM), Ramires(RM),Mata(CAM),Hazard(LM),Torres A.K.A El Nino(CF). Then Marin Should be coming on for any one who is not playing excellently in the second half

  3. As for me I would prefer to play hazard in d middle of d pack and play Mata on d wing. Hazard is d quicker of d two and he has dribling skill more than Mata.

  4. i do not know if you can do it but why not play 4-2-3-1 with Mata Oscar Hazard behind Torres and then every 30 minutes each one plays in the number 10 position. can they do that??

    2. i think that is what they're doing now, i cant tell who's playing in the no 10 role and the left wing because they're switching places so often

  5. GK: Cech
    RB: Ivanovic
    CB: Cahill
    CB: Terry
    LB: Cole
    LCM: Lampard
    RCM: Ramires
    RAM: Hazard
    CAM: Mata
    LAM: Oscar
    ST: Torres

I would frankly think our midfield is not good enough to help our attackers. They keep passing back. It is of no use if we have best attackers ,when we don't get the ball quickly to them.

May be buying someone or giving Josh more chances.

  7. Well i tink if Mata starts as the number 10 and changes position with Oscar n Hazard whiles the game goes on will give us so edge and will make us unpredictable too. And with time we would know who plays best at 10. But for now, lets all be patient. My selection will be: Cech, Ivanovic, Terry, Luiz, Romeo, Oscar, Sturidge, Hazard, Mata n Torres.

    1. That is the smartest selection I have seen yet. You have to work from what is known to work to those that have bags of quality but need to gel. for Spain and Chelsea, Torres and Mata have an unbelievable chemistry, so dont touch that. Sturidge is proven to know what to do and willing to do it, give him his shot and have Hazard play to left. I may even bench Hazard for Ramires because he has show to be a big gamer, hence his crucial goal in champs league... Romeu is the best holding mid we have but somehow noone is giving him a shot, we keep clamoring for someone else, and i just cannot see him with Oscar not working, that shores the defense up and gives good transition with Oscar. That been said, i will watch for the performance of Sturidge, so Marin, Ramires and Hazard can have new spots to check out.. the big deal with this chelsea side is figuring out who is best on the wings, and who is the best holding/transition midfielder combo that we have... our 10 no doubt ought to be Mata with Tores mainly because we gotta get Torres going and anything else wont do it short term.

  8. All these talk. What about if Marin becomes our best AM?. The dude has impressed in pre season, he is blending well and I think he's getting his motivation back. Besides, he's not the kid. My team would be Cech(GK) Terry(CB) Cahill(CB) Mikel(DM) Oscar(CM/ deep lying play maker) Harzard(AMR) Mata(AMC/ advance play maker) Marin (AML) Fernando(CF). Only the best players that impress in a Chelsea shirt should get to keep or take their preferred positions.
