Many Chelsea players were involved for their countries this week. They flew across the whole world to play in friendlies and qualifiers.
Brazil played against South Africa and China. They won unconvincingly from a Hulk goal. All three Chelsea players (Luiz, Ramires, Oscar) did not stand out. David Luiz was the captain in the absence of Thiago Silva. Brazil demolished China 8-0 in their second game. The goals were scored by Ramires, Neymar (hat-trick), Lucas, Hulk and an own goal. Chelsea man Oscar also scored from a corner on his 21st birthday. He assisted three of the goals and was the most vital player.
Five Chelsea players were in the England side to play Moldova away, only 2 featured. The old guard, Terry and Lampard. England won comfortably after two Frank Lampard goals and a goal apiece by Defoe, Milner and Baines. Lampard had an overall brilliant game and Terry was very important in stopping Moldova's spirited attacks every now and then. However, one negative note. Our captain limped off late in the game with an ankle injury and it was confirmed he would miss the Ukraine game at Wembley.
Petr Cech was magnificent in Czech Republic's 0-0 draw with Denmark on Saturday in their first World Cup qualifying game. He was rested for Tuesday's friendly match against Finland. Victor Moses was instrumental in Nigeria's tie against Liberia. He was dangerously tricky and also won a penalty for Nigeria. Fernando Torres made his 100th appearance for Spain as captain but had a disappointing performance against a weak Saudi Arabian outfit.
Three first team players played for the under-21s against Charlton Athletic. New boy Cesar Azpilicueta, Paulo Ferriera, Ross Turnbull and co were beaten 3-2. Azpilicueta played the full game at right back and was "defensively sound throughout, while also offering a glimpse of his attacking threat" according to the official Chelsea website.
Belgium boys were also involved. Courtois and Hazard started in Belgium's 2-0 over Wales in which two defenders scored; Kompany with a powerful header and Jan Vertonghen with a piledriver of a free-kick. Lukaku came on early in the second half and didn't get on the score sheet although he a few chances. Kevin De Bruyne was also a substitute but wasn't too much of a trouble for Wales' defense.
