| Why Chelsea Don't Need Marouane Fellaini |
Fellaini's style of play can be described as that of a box-to-box midfielder, one who dominates the midfield while also being able to join in on the attack whenever needed. In the type of double pivot that Chelsea play in the middle of the park, 2 different types of midfielders are preferred: a defensive midfielder and a play-maker. Chelsea have both Jon Obi Mikel and Oriol Romeu to operate as defensive midfielders. As it is, Fellaini's tendency to constantly venture forward means that playing him as a proper defensive midfielder would be suicidal. That leaves only one slot open for Fellaini to operate in: the play-maker. At the moment, the "play-maker" in Chelsea's midfield is usually Frank Lampard or Ramires (even though it's worth noting that it's not in the strengths of either Lamps or Ramires to control the game). Super Frank is 34 now, so it doesn't take a genius to figure out that he won't be around forever. That would leave Ramires with no competition for that second slot in the midfield, right? Wrong.
Chelsea have 2 very young and talented central midfielders in Josh McEachran and Kevin De Bruyne out on loan. Granted Kevin De Bruyne is more of an attacking midfielder/winger, but he has operated as a CM for Genk and Werder Bremen and would be an ideal fit for the pivot. Josh McEachran is seen as an exciting & talented young midfielder who is just waiting for that chance needed to prove himself at the highest level. So far, both have impressed on loan. While De Bruyne has been in the news for racking up the goals, McEachran has been a regular for Middlesborough and has put in a few solid performances. Surely it would make more sense to give them a chance to prove themselves at Chelsea (considering their style of play is exactly what's needed at the moment) instead of spending money on a midfielder whose style of play may not be fully suited to the pivot. Also, using Josh/De Bruyne and Ramires as our CM options would mean we have 2 CM's who provide different threats in that position. Despite the fact that Ramires' style seems ill-suited to the pivot, box-to-box midfielders can be successful playing in a double pivot. Yaya Toure has proved that at Manchester City.
Fellaini may be a "beast", but it would be in the best interests of all involved if this beast were to stay away from the hunting grounds known as Stamford Bridge.

I've been saying this exactly for a while now, but Fellaini would be a awful purchase for all these reasons and more. What we do need, if we do indeed need anyone, is Cesc Fàbregas. And this is why.
ReplyDelete1) Age and experience: Cesc Fabregas is 25, and already has years and years of experience, and importantly has proven himself over many seasons in the Premier League. Perfect. He'll be around for a good 10 more years, so he wouldn't be a short-term fix.
Fàbregas also knows what it takes to win; he's won the FA Cup, the Premier League, Copa del Rey, Club World Cup and more. And he's still only 25.
2)Playing style: Fàbregas is used to playing the beautiful football with Barcelona and Spain, and previously with Arsenal, that we are trying to engender here at Chelsea. There are very few players anywhere better at tiki-taka passing than Cesc Fàbregas.
3) Versatility: Cesc Fàbregas is an excellent Regista. He's also an outstanding Trequartista. He can do a very good job as a false nine. But he more usually plays out wide. You name it, Cesc Fàbregas can do it, and very well at that.
4) Surroundings: Obviously Cesc Fàbregas lived in London for eight years, so he should be able to settle in straight away, even more so due to the fact that we already have four Spaniards at Chelsea. And Fàbregas' presence and guiding hand would surely help guys like Oriol Romeu and Cesar Azpilicueta. And all our midfielders, for that matter. As a bonus, he already speaks English.
5) Availability: Barcelona probably wouldn't take too much persuading to let Fàbregas go. He's struggled slightly for minutes under Vilanova, and there's been reports of a rift between the two. A bid of £25m should be enough, which is more than reasonable.
Fellaini on the other hand, would be no better than Frank Lampard. For Belgium, he is nominally a central midfielder, but he is so prone to making his bursts from midfield that Axel Witsel is continually left outnumbered and swamped when teams counter-attack Belgium. Exactly what Lampard does to Mikel. And, he would be very hard to prise from Everton. He might want to leave, but David Moyes would make a deal extremely difficult.
In conclusion: If Chelsea need anyone, the player they need is a certain Mr. Fàbregas that we all used to dislike so passionately. But Chelsea must do everything they can to get him.

DeleteI'm not sure about the availability of Cesc. Remember all the trouble they went through to get him. Barca don't really have a top class back up in the midfield especially for the replacement of xavi. I think Fabregas might be tempted to leave but they would not sell. Maybe if we give them Luiz?

DeleteWe already have Kevin and Josh for the midfield. Kevin wears the number 6 jersey for Bremen and that already says alot. I've watched a few Bremen games and it looks like he can take on challenge and hold his ground with few times even bumping his opponent over. His long passes is perfect for the deep laying playmaker role,not to mention his long shots. I think the reason he went on loan is because Lampard is still part of the squad so it's only wise to let him play regulary and keep developing. I'm pretty sure Chelsea didn't just loan him out to Bremen just because there isn't a place for him now but we I think the club was looking for a specific offer where he can play deep and develop in that side of the pitch. It makes perfect sense for me.

ReplyDeleteI'm sorry I don't agree with you,reasons because,(1)felaini's more profesion than this guys you just mention(2)he has that believe in himself by moving forward when the atackers failed to deliver and(3)he has the height to disturb any opponent defence in time of set piece and even can help our defence from set piece because of his height,hope it's gonna be a good buy for chelsea.

DeleteWell, I like this comment that Torres is working, but it is obvious that the power or frequency he is operating is not strong enough for winning the EPL. Look at Man Utd, they improved on a strike force that is better than our current one. It means that winning the league goes beyond making up points, it also involves scoring goals.
DeleteI know goal difference as we seen how important it was for City last season. One thing you forget is that Robbie mentioned in preseason about getting the perfect balance and that he wants a well connected team. Why do you think Sturridge is second to Torres who performed better than the Spaniard last season? Because he isn't a team player and won't set up team mates who are in a better position to score. Falcao and Cavani are Target players like Drogba was. It's so obvious that Robbie is wants to play a false 9 system.
