A New Central Midfielder: Necessity or Luxury?

One of the most common criticisms of Chelsea last season was an apparent lack of creativity in midfield. One could argue that there was some truth in this allegation, as the Chelsea midfield didn't always control the game as was expected of them. More often than not, the midfield appeared extremely slow, & the need for a creative spark in the middle of the park was apparent. The transfer window officially opened today, & our 2 latest recruits (Marko Marin & Eden Hazard) have officially become Chelsea players. Of course, neither of them is a central midfield player. But then again, do we really need a new CM?

With Roberto Di Matteo changing the formation from a 4-3-3 to a 4-2-3-1, the no. of CM's required came down from 3 to 2. Currently, the players who can operate in that position are Frank Lampard, John Obi Mikel, Oriol Romeu, Michael Essien, Raul Meireles, Ramires, Josh McEachran, Yossi Benayoun & Kevin De Bruyne. I expect Essien, Meireles & maybe even Benayoun to leave the club this season. Even if all 3 of them leave, RDM would still have 6 players to call upon in order to fill the 2 vacancies in the middle of the park.

I don't think Josh McEachran or Kevin De Bruyne are ready for regular first-team football at Chelsea, so I expect both of them to be loaned out. Even if everything that I've mentioned above happens, there are still 4 players to call upon for 2 positions, which is the ideal squad depth (2 players for 1 position). I fail to see the actual need for Luka Modric, Joao Moutinho or even Marouane Fellaini. Signing any of them would be considered a luxury buy, nothing more. Last I checked we weren't Manchester City, so there's no need to buy every player in sight.

Of course, one could argue that Frank Lampard is aging, & we will need someone to replace him when he's gone. The way I see it, by the time Super Frank is ready to retire, I expect both Josh McEachran & Kevin De Bruyne to be ready to battle it out for that vacant spot in midfield. But we will need to buy a new CM if Lampard leaves the club (rumors have been circulating that MLS club LA Galaxy are interested in luring him to the US) but if we sell only those players who need to be sold, I see no need for signing a new CM, & certainly not for as high a price as £40 million.

  3. I don't agree with u mate !!!. I think u are just counting the numbers not the qualities. its good to have 4 for 2 positions. But just see what are the four we have. Lampard, Mikel, Ramires & Romeu. According to me midfield should be priority at the moment. we must buy a world class midfielder. Mikel & Romeu are the same type of players that can't play together. Lampard is not getting younger and probably thats also not his best position to play. Although he has played admirably well in the last year. But can he play that much matches given his age. Remember we have to play in the club world cup also. If lampard gets injured who will play there.
The another curious case is of ramires. I think he is more of a 4-3-3 player rather than 4-2-3-1. He is younger version of lampard with lot of energy and running but not very creative. The midfield duo of Mikel & Ramires will be complete disaster. SO WE MUST BUY A PLAYER WHO CAN PLAY ALONGSIDE A DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDER.

    1. Well said mate, it'd be a disaster if we put Ramires and mikel next to each other. Ramires excelle at right wing during the latter stages of the season and I think RDM would be wise to stick with him in that spot. Which would give us no reason to dish out a ridiculous amount of cash for Hulk. We NEED Luka Modric.

  4. I believe chelsea are looking for midfielders only and forgetting problems in the front torres is good but he is not some striker you can rely on for the whole season some extra striker is desparately needed and more shot takes around the ark are needed like hulk and falcao

  5. I don't agree at all, everyone saw our midfield last season. No pace, no creativity, no quality passing, no fluidity, no chemistry. They were always losing the ball on our side of the pitch. Lampard isn't the player he once was and if anyone thinks he's gonna put the midfield on his back like in recent years is just being naive. The only way we ever scored was from speedy runs by ramires and long balls to drogba. You hardly ever saw any build up play to get a goal. We dont have didier to be sending those long balls too next s season. What are we gonna do? That's why modric should be number 1 on our list of players to buy. Torres's type of play needs good through balls and passing to get goals, and the way our midfield is now that's very unlikely. We need modric to control the midfield and give us that creativity and passing skill he has. He'll be like our own Andrea pirlo which we are in desperate need of. Modric should be our TOP priority. Hulk is a luxury we don't need but we're in dire need of a world class midfielder.
