Ashley Cole Fined £90,000 by FA |
Cole, who infamously labeled the FA a "#BUNCHOFT**TS" on the social networking site after the FA accused him of perjury in the John Terry court case, admitted to an FA charge which was "improper and/or brought the game into disrepute". The FA's statement in relation to the Ashley Cole fine and charge reads as follows:
"Chelsea's Ashley Cole has been fined £90,000 after he admitted an FA charge in relation to a Twitter comment which was improper and/or brought the game into disrepute. Cole, who had requested a non-personal hearing, was also warned as to his future conduct."
No one is actually surprised at the fact that Ashley Cole was fined by the FA. It was something everyone knew was bound to happen as soon as Ashley Cole sent that tweet. And while the fan in me lauded Ashley Cole for having the nerve to speak his mind, the logical side in me condemned him. Despite the fact that he will go down as one of the best (if not the best) left-backs in his generation, Ashley isn't the most popular person in the world due to his colourful private life (to say the least) and a tendency to speak his mind and not take any nonsense from anyone. The John Terry saga was already dragging on and Ashley Cole only added fuel to the fire with his tweet. What amazes me though is the FA's double standards. Rio Ferdinand was charged £45,000 for endorsing and laughing along at a racist tweet aimed at Ashley Cole. Cole was fined double that amount for something that was said in the heat of the moment. I'm not saying that Cole shouldn't be let off without any punishment at all, but surely endorsing a racist tweet is a worse offense than labeling the FA a "#BUNCHOFT**TS". Right?
