Luiz after a thunderous freekick |
Chelsea marched to the top of their Champions League group with a rather unconvincing performance against the Danish Champions. Although the scoreline suggests a different story, the Danish side pretty much dominated the Chelsea side for most part of the game.
Chelsea XI: Cech; Ivanovic, Luiz, Cahill, Cole, Ramires, Lampard, Oscar, Mata, Moses, Torres.
Chelsea XI: Cech; Ivanovic, Luiz, Cahill, Cole, Ramires, Lampard, Oscar, Mata, Moses, Torres.
Nordsjaelland XI : J. Hansen; Parkhurts, Okore, Runje, Mtiliga; Adu, Stokholm; Lorentzen, Nordstrand, John; Beckmann.
Chelsea went into this game with 3 changes to the side that beat Arsenal. Hazard, Terry and Mikel dropped to the bench being replaced by Moses, Cahill and Lampard. On the other hand Nordsjaelland named an unchanged side which lost 2-0 to Shakhtar Donetsk in matchday one.
First Half: After a good first 10 minutes which saw Moses hit the post, Chelsea were mostly on the back foot trying to stop the string of attacks by the Danish side. Although Petr Cech was hardly tested in the first half, the high pressing and possession game which Hjulden’s side is famous for was very evident. Nordsjaelland dominated the half with 56% possession compared to 44% for Chelsea. Chelsea though finally broke the resilient Danish side thanks to some slick passing by Torres and Lampard that found Mata free to place the ball through Hansen’s legs. Nordsjaelland finally came close after Joshua John’s spectacular effort came off the upright.
Luiz's stunner |
Second Half: Chelsea had the ball in the back of the net shortly after the half started as Torres found Oscar who put the ball past Hansen but was called offside. But the home side did not give up as they continued to press Chelsea and trying to push for the equalizer. Nordsjaelland came close after Beckmann hit a first-time effort , only to see the ball sliced away from the target. The hosts came close again after Joshua John was spectacularly denied by Cech. However Chelsea finally killed the game thanks to a spectacular free kick by David Luiz which was followed by 2 quick goals by Mata and Ramires.
Full Time: FC Nordsjaelland 0-4 Chelsea
